General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2025/26 season

Personally I think it would be a bad thing - they are my club and easy to attend. More importantly from a Socceroo point of view they have probably been close to the most influential A League club since the start of the A-League. 38 Socceroos have played for the Mariners. More importantly 25 Socceroos got there A League start at the Mariners before becoming Socceroos with over 500 caps between them. 83 times a Mariners player has been captain.
agree completely

That's true- the VFL was a big thing in Adelaide. Everyone supported a VFL club as well as their local SANFL club. They could hardly get home from Saturday's match quick enough to watch the VFL replays on TV.
Yeah I feel people from interstate don’t grasp just how popular Aussie rules is here and how deeply entrenched into the culture.

Young gens wouldn’t know…..
From ages before AFL came to be we saw on the news the VFL news and the SA rivalry.
Yer you guys are another eggball state even though real football has its footprint that I’m glad about.

SA had a massive inferiority complex with regards to Victoria.
I think this is partly what fuelled the Adelaide United vs Melbourne Victory rivalry in the early years of the A League.

I agree, the only 2 objective measures of getting better/worse are asian results and the performances of transfers out of the league and neither of these give a clear signal things are getting worse

I think 2 things are happening
1) people assume more youth=worse
2) people think its better if the crowds are bigger

Funny though I’ll flip that - Vics are the ones with the inferiority complex for as along as I’ve known they have always boasted they are The State even though they are not.
They have stood over Adelaide like they are the big foot because they can’t do that to NSW nor Qld.
Yes hence then the AL rivalry as mentioned was pretty big like the big V on the kits and IF I recall right on the VFl ones when there was a state of origin back in the 70’s ????

Whats gone wrong with the Mariners in past 18 months? They won the league only two years ago.

Or it it a case of when they are winning, the community rallies, and when losing nobody cares?
Rich Peil left - that’s basically it.

The SA-Victoria rivalry started back in colonial times when the marked the border in the wrong place and Victora now has land that was meant to belong to SA. The SA government even threatened to invade!

West End even made two satirical ads about it

But yes State of Origin was big until the 90’s and the AFL is finally bringing it back

I wonder if all the negativism that we hear regarding the A League is more the interaction of the Championships clubs finally seeing some light. Whilst it is problematic at the moment, like the Rugby League war, when the friction ends which I expect towards 2034 and the finish of the A League guarantees, There will be a coming together of the pyramid and things will resolve themselves.

Also the other codes have very much to lose when the A League/Championship/NPL is given some air by the local media. Whilst this year's Championship is merely baby steps, it is clear that Australian Football is stirring.

Most of it has come people connected to the a league oddly enough, mcbreen, fbk spring to mind but it seemed so many were claiming the standard had dropped when we became a youth league. I just didnt see it personally

The a league clubs clearly had poorer results in the oz cup, but that seems to be a story of npls improving?
