FIFA WC 26 - Other Nations LIVE Match Thread ⚽

Portugal vs Croatia especially the second half was the match of the World Cup, so much drama espeically towards the end I feel for Croatia it must feel so heart breaking to have that goal disallowed like that but they played great today.

Spain looked like classical Spain, complete control and scored some nice goals against Austria.

Spain vs Portugal feels like a final but its crazy its a round of 16 match lol, looking forward to this nevertheless.
I thought the same for Netherlands vs Morocco. There have been some good match ups early on in the knockout phase.

We beat Spain in last year's Nations League so hopefully a repeat.

If VAR is removed, are those against it going to be quiet when their team loses unfairly? They'll just go back to blaming the officials then.
It's still the officials that are making the final decisions though and they are still being blamed for what is occurring as well as the technology.

I wasn't a big fan of all the tech and I'm still not. However, I'm not sure if we will ever go completely back.

I wouldn't mind if we just kept VAR for offsides and goal line tech. I think everything else is too 50/50.

Yep I agree VAR for offsides and goal line tech and also for the howlers like the 'hand of God".

If it's not clear and obvious, just it let be. If your looking at 20 different replays and angles and taking 5 minutes to make the call, that's ruining the game.

I'm sorry that's not clear and obvious.

As said before 3 second delay and no replay.

Its offside call that is the difference.
Plus as Sarah Walsh said near the end thr offside goal was scored on tje 114 minutes 4 minutes more than the extra time, where did that come from.

I had that in my mind earlier on, we have embraced tech so much - its damned if you do dammed if you don't.
TBH VAR is pathetic for the offside calls be it a finger nail/half a lace sceanrios therefore I'd sooner we get back to be annoyed the ref and lino make the calls like before.
Goal line tech that is linked to the refs garmin or whatever it is yep nothing to argue there.

I must say I have to agree on that... Was a great match either way from all and happy Portugal won... The "decision" was garbage to my mind but I agree with Robbo that it was past time added on nominated so if it DID count Portugal would have every right to feel cheated.

PS Fuck Ronaldo...

The only solution is see is a mass cultural change. No protesting to refs, no constant replays by broadcasters and a culture like handball that you respect the decision and get on with it. Along with some tweaks to the offside rule and we may be in better stead. I hate the notion football lives on controversial decisions as a way to accept ref faults. It's unjust and the tech helps us more than not.

If we are looking at the slightest touch, that touched a hair based on some sensor. Which no one has been able to show on a camera.

Come on man. That's not clear and obvious.

The goal in the 113/114 min - you do realise Portugal scored in 94, by the time it restarts it easily 3-4 mins and all the checks that are done.

While clear and obvious is the VAR instruction people who hate VAR also love to revoke it. The things missed have massive effects on the game. I prefer the phrasing that if the apparent rule breach creates to much of an advantage with a goal or preventing one then it's got to be used.

No offsides in final third. Put a blue line and the vast majority of calls won't be needed. The game is so swift and dynamic just let them play. It'll break goal records but maybe it's something to remove the issue.

I understand the reactive behaviour is an issue today - I don't mind the booing etc but the blatant ref/lino abuse is OTT but yer that expecting a massive cultural change that I feel difficult to happen.
Mind you VAR hasn't changed that behaviour much in any case.
I'm in the what goes around comes around - not every time but karma does/has happened.

The officials still cop it on the field - the VAR fellas are lucky locked up in the nose bleed stands in safety, plus I suspect seco's are nearby as well.
