FIFA 2026 WC - general

I thought Jens Castrop at Gladbach was of Filipino heritage but he's made the South Korean squad.

Can anyone name any player who ever made the Korean team without having a Korean name? Maybe some Brazilians long ago?
Saw online that he is the first mixed-blood player to play for the Korean men’s National team.

Oh now I see what you mean! No, I don’t think so. Jens Castrop (German dad, Korean mum) would be the first.
I'm sure the Korean Voldemorts are disgusted. Would be a handy quiz round to name footballers at the world cup without what one would consider a local name but it can get messy. Australia essentially doesn't count or would we say non British/Irish?

TV on now. Mexican leader called Sheinbaum. That sort of thing. But then with a lot of countries such as Argentina or Ecuador I don't have enough knowledge to know what their ancient indigenous names would look like.

Well. That got a reaction. 😄

We've loved reading every single comment, the good, the bad, and the "can't afford an antenna?" ones.

Here's the honest truth about why there's no telly at Invergordon Bar and it's got nothing to do with the cost of a screen.

When we opened this place, we made a deliberate decision. No TVs. Not because we couldn't, but because we didn't want to.

There are plenty of brilliant bars in Melbourne that will be showing the Scotland games on big screens, and we genuinely mean that, go to them if that's what you're after. No hard feelings.

What we set out to build was something a little different. A bar where you actually talk to the person next to you. Where you make a friend, argue about something that doesn't matter, and leave having had a proper night. We reckon Melbourne has enough bars where everyone stares at a wall.

Putting a TV up for the World Cup would've meant putting a TV up. Permanently. And that's not who we are.

We get that some people are disappointed, especially for a moment as rare as Scotland at a World Cup. We've thought about that too, more than you might expect. But we have to back the bar we set out to build.

For those who get it, and there are plenty of you, we'll see you on 14 June. Pints ready, sound system cranked up (and yes, just to be clear, the game will be played loud and proud through our speakers, not through that beautiful old wireless in the photo 📻).

For everyone else, we genuinely hope you find a great spot to watch it.

The post above from a Scottish pub in Melbourne not showing games is laid out above. Their choice in the end. I guess a lot of Scots wanted to watch on something of a Scottish ambience.

Fair enough sticking to your business model.

Other bars live off such events.

Yeah some Asians are pretty fucking racist to each other. Then you’ve got colourism in places like India which is where people discriminate based on literal skin colour (e.g. North Indians calling South Indians “monkeys”; lighter skin is seen as more fashionable in South Asia and skin-lightening creams are quite popular there).

We won't go down this rabbit hole much more but you see all the 'hottest' Indian female actresses and they're essentially white or Hispanic looking. Whitening make ups and photoshop. I see them on my feed sometimes and think it's think Telenova actress.

The better way as you couldn't have fringe squad members around with the bitters but they'd rather not be there at all. Is Palmer supposed to then score a hat trick in the practice game and tell Tuchel he was wrong?

To be fair Cole Palmer has had struggles with injury throughout this season but it doesn't mean that Tuchel shouldn't be taking risks when picking the playing list if his remarkable form and value to the England squad outweighs his injury proneness.

Could make a full list post-World Cup actually! I already planned on a map of dual internationals.

Claudia Sheinbaum (the Mexican President) comes from a secular Jewish (Ashkenazi and Sephardic) family so her name is Yiddish. As far as I know she only speaks Spanish and English though and doesn’t speak Ladino or Yiddish (and isn’t Israeli so wouldn’t speak Hebrew; these days Yiddish is really only spoken by Orthodox Ashkenazi Jews despite it once being the main language of Ashkenazi Jews, while Hebrew was a dead language and only got truly revived because Israel was created).

Regarding Indigenous Latin Americans, you’ll find that plenty of players have some Indigenous ancestry but cannot speak their language, have Spanish names and practise few Indigenous traditions because racial mixing has been quite common in that part of the world for over 500 years. Mestizos (European and Indigenous; called Mestiços in Brazil) make up the majority of the population in many countries (including Mexico). In many countries like Brazil and Colombia there are also Black/European, Black/Indigenous and even all three mixed together. Nevertheless, some countries do have large Indigenous populations who do practise their culture and speak their languages, most notably in countries like Bolivia (which is majority-Indigenous and over 40% speak Indigenous languages, mainly Quechua and Aymara).

I get the feeling Palmer's demeanour and attitude isn't necessarily for Tuchel. Tuchel mentioned commitment in the press conference a lot and some of the big names have come across as lethargic in England games.

Gibbs White should've been included somehow.

We should make an Italian ancestry team. Italiano and Circati are in!

I would assume so.
Oi stop hijacking my prerequisites :D

If the profile has both flags then OK!

Our Croatia and potential Serbia one would be interesting.

Germany would almost be possible with the 74 side having some. Kruse counts but it's interesting how he and Mooy really never saw any mention of a few generations ago background. Bit like myself with Hungarian.
