I’m sure the AFL team will be fine, they got 100,000 “associate members” or whatever they are called, for a 23,000 seater stadium and they have the large coffers of the AFL, and state and federal governments behind them. Football fans can only dream……….

If you look at Gold Coast and GWS they have been clear failures. I hope Tassie isnt the same but i fear for them on a number of fronts

Are Tasmanians so anti football? I know they like AFL and cricket but there's not much to do down there. They're better off for having the time to do their nature things but I reckon they'd enjoy and A League team with a bit of local talent too.

I don't think they are anti-football but Macquarie Pt does nothing for football. AFL wins in winter and try scheduling football around 4 day cricket games as well as one-dayers and T20.

They need to find a home and the Clarence City council where they're building is not going to attract anybody even if it was expanded to a decent size.

Who exactly is gonna open the game up? They'd go back to an 8 team league like it was 22 yrs ago if they had to.

We've been hearing change is coming soon for a long while and all anyone gets is breadcrumbs.

As for our bid. I trully believe the club is desperate to get out of the npl bubble. I think if the choice was between A league or a fully functioning 2nd tier the choice would be the latter, but lets be honest the Championship is never going to be anything more than a 9 week tournament until its eventually scrapped.

I dont necessarily like the idea of trying again, but i can see why they are going for it. Lets be honest its also the final shot because of the other mob making a mess of it.

How so? They’ve survived for over a decade.

Tassie is AFL heartland. There’s no way they’ll fail.

GWS and GCS are both bleeding cash and have made slow inroads into their markets.

GWS in particular have been a failure. Their crowds are diabolical.

Tassie will have massive issues with player retention at the AFL level

Further, the AFL admits that after all these years and the financial black hole, they are no better off than when they started. BTW the AFL does not publish any financial figures associated with GWS or GCS - not even the other clubs know how much money has been sunk. Also, St Kilda has been receiving financial assistance from the AFL for quite a long time.

GWS and GC have been nothing but propped up by the AFL. $4 billion in broadcast revenue, you can do whatever you like.

Agree. They'll be the next Adelaide Crows and West Coast, parochial, although not as many numbers, but plenty of sell outs I'd imagine.

Some of the comments here are VERY disappointing, apparently we have so many supporters we have banned over 200 of them already ??

It's certainly not anti-football, Kingborough Lions got a reasonable crowd in their Australia Cup fixture, but IMHO Football Tasmania is one of the blockers to A-League entry now. They're more interested in getting $80m for their "Home of Football" than they are for pushing for an A-League team or upgrades to suitable venues.

I think it’s sort of built into the finances of the league that they’ll make a loss isn’t it? They’re willing to just have a team there to show their brand has a presence in the market and mark it up to the cost of businesses as far as I can tell in the way some shady businesses have legal fees built into their finances

18-19% of Tasmanians are members, I’d say their crowds will be quite good. There’s only one code of tackle footy down there and it’s Aussie rules, they don’t give a shit about rugby codes (or more formally, rugby is more niche down there).
