Best overseas leagues for Aussies?

that true jas88 - I think thats part of what you go through though eh as a budding hopeful making it.....
Sometimes your own home system just isn't going to give you the chance.
Celtic didn't like what they saw he goes elsewhere and prospers, similar in a small degree re Volpato and another from here that escapes me.
The rest is history.
I think it shows the lack of vision by TD's but at the sametime no one is perfect at any given job in developing or recruiting.
Aaron Mooy at WSW? Did not fit Popa's style and moved to Hearts (?).

After having a look at Wrexham over 3 games in Aus and NZ, I might have to reappraise my former evaluation of the Championship and League 1.

Not viewing the Championship and League 1 for a long time, since Fox covered these leagues, if Wrexham are the typical football team in terms of style, in the upper table of League 1 and the Champ overall, Aussies appear to be making good choices playing for teams in these leagues.

Whenever I watched them the hoofball and second ball football played, was anathema to most of the style played in international football.

Wrexham's tactics and style of play were so far in advance of most teams in these leagues 8 odd years ago, or whenever Jedi played for Crystal Place in the Champ.

Looking at recent Socceroo games, it seems like the MLS in the US, the JL in Japan, and the English Championship, are improving as good options for Aussies, who don't make the Big Five in UEFA, or, the 30 odd big clubs in UEFA who play a lot of Champ League or Europa League football in Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Scotland, Greece, Turkey, et al.

The Aus players playing in USA, Japan and English Championship, have developed skills that are extrapolating well to international football. These leagues may well be increasing their world ranking in global football - and - are becoming better destinations for prospective Socceroos.

MLS lacks the IMO-vital ingredient of pro/rel, hence why I disagree on that point(having said that, I concede it’s not necessarily a bad destination for our GKs given how attack-minded that league tends to be).

Jed Drew, who’s now at TSV Hartberg in Austria🇦🇹 has gone on record as saying its Bundesliga is arguably the perfect first-destination for Aussie players in Europe🇪🇺

Times move on D - the lower leagues follow the main league, been pretty normal over the decades.

As far as I'm concerned (mens) you end up at the MLS because you haven't been selected anywhere in EU full stop.
Mind you its good option for a fair salary and less competition so to speak - and better for our girls if they can't get in the EU clubs as has been happenning.

The American women's league is of a VERY high standard, hence why they are so good.

Just looked at Global Network rating world leagues. If accurate, it has ramifications for Aus.

1-5 rankings the UEFA Big Five - England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany - I think in that order?

Interesting from then on:
6. Belgium
7. English Champ
8. Portugal
9. Brazil
10. MLS
11. Dutch Eredivisie
12. Argentina
13. Poland ?? ?
14. Swiss league.

33. Scotland

45. A League

I would have thought 6 and 7 Brazil and Arg.

8,9,10, 11 - Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium and Swiss league, I would have surmised.

If true, the English Champ and MLS are much better destinations than I thought for Aus players abroad before reading this.

And, 33 in Scotland in miserable weather, isn’t worth leaving 45 ranked A League for, particularly if ACL football is on the menu.

If I evaluate improved skill set, then Devlin and Miller have improved from playing in Scotland in recent times.

Rowles may have done too. Ditto Baccus.

Rogic did too, but not as much as expected. Mooy also improved.

Players might get a bigger bank balance from Scotland, but in terms of Socceroo selection our players in Eredivisie, MLS and Champ, are a lot better off.

ACL football 🤣🤣🤣, BTW , they also have UCL, EL, and CL on the menu in Scotland.

I'd like to think this game gets decent clubs looking.

Wherever players go they need to play. Going onto the bench at a big club isn’t as good as playing regularly at a lower ranked club.

I get fed up with pundits like David Basheer constantly talking about the great leagues and clubs players play in, rather than analyzing what they are doing in front of him playing international football.

After Global Network ratings, I can’t believe how much the English Champ and MLS have gone up the rankings?

Which is good because we have increasing numbers of Roos in both leagues.

I think both leagues are great moves for Aussies, not least because of the English language. They have also improved massively in terms of quality over the last ten years. Better youth coaching for the locals, better foreigners and better coaching styles have seen them improve.

I think if we had 10 regular Championship starters in the Socceroos squad we’d be in a good position. You have to be a professional who is fit, strong, mentally tough, positionally aware, fast and increasingly, very skilful. We used to talk about the Holy Trinity, I think the Chmpaionship is just as good for Aussies now.

The MLS should grow again after the WC. More local interest, more money for better foreigners and ever improving locals from and enormous talent pool. It will continue to get better.

EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A and Championship for the top tier of our players.

Jupiler Lig, Eredivisie and Swiss Super League for the next tier. The best places to start. My favourite tier, really interesting leagues and open minded about our guys.

I'm in two minds about whether to add Buli 2 here because its been a mixed bag for our guys in this league but it probably deserves to be there.

Danish Superliga, SPFL and J-League below these but still good. The SPFL gets a bad wrap and I feel this thread is another vehicle for that. It's a league with flaws and strengths but at least they give our guys a go.

Italy and the Balkan leagues I reckon you need heritage there.

Spain and Portugal I hate when our guys go there it almost always ends badly.

The other Euro leagues, K-League, MLS, Saudi Pro League (cringe) are in the mixer with the AL and are acceptable when it fits the player and the stage of their careers or playing qualities.
Don’t want to derail the thread but in another thread I’ve started about best leagues for Aussies, according to Global Football Network, ranking all work leagues, English Champ have gone to 7th, and MLS now ranked 10th. This is good news for Aussies!

I was listening to a podcast this morning (can’t remember which) that observed our first goal went through all the players that were a surprise/borderline inclusion: Beach (over Ryan) to Burgess (over Herrington) to Okon-Engstler (over Irvine) to Irankunda (who could potentially have started on the bench to come on late).

I’ve got my gripes with Popovic, but fuck me he played an absolute blinder. It’s up there in the pantheon of best managerial performances for the Roos ever (and there’s been a few good ones).

If any Mods are reading this thread, can you post my last 2 posts into the Socceroo Stats/Analysis thread, please?

I’ve posted them in the wrong thread.

I can’t copy and paste as I don’t have access to a desktop ATM.

Thanks.

Really interesting observations, TB.

All controversial selections.

Also, back to good leagues for Aussies, Beach and Okon Jr still ply their trade in the AL and have excelled in the WC.

The league doesn’t matter as match as the game time. In the last ten years too many talented players have gone to teams that have farmed them out to reserve teams or lower teams, or else they’ve come back after 4 years with fewer than 50 games under their belts.
From a financial perspective they earned a couple of million to sit on their arse. From a career perspective, they’ve lost 4 years.
