Australian news and politics.

The Coalition has slammed Labor’s first home buyer scheme after it emerged more than 51,000 permanent residents have accessed it since 2022.

The figures show around one in five participants in the scheme were not Australian citizens, drawing criticism from Deputy Liberal Leader Jane Hume.

I've always been of the belief that only Australian citizens should be allowed to buy property in this country.

This government has totally sold out Australian citizens to chase foreign citizens in an attempt to curry-favour them to secure their vote once they get citizenship.

It's a joke.

I actually agree with you on this.... just not about permanent residents who I feel have every right to see their taxes being used on a federal scheme that benefits them and aids in their transition to full citizenship with all the rights that entails. Even Ginger Braun admitted as such.

Foreign nationals should NOT have a right to own Australian property just like Liberal pollies like Fletcher and Walalce own properties in Italy or Canada.

I agree. Especially in this housing market. It inflates the housing market and hurts people trying to enter it. Both sides of politics need to do better to fix housing affordability.

When you don't have affordable stable housing, or jobs that can support you/your family, what happens? I think this is the root of a lot of social issues atm. Fix that and you'll see a positive impact on other issues like youth crime.

I agree foreign residents shouldn't be able to purchase Australian properties, but surely those with Australian PR should be able to? They live here and pay taxes, and our country would be fucked without them.

Is that you Barnaby?

Nonsense comment. Canada (which ironically has been under a left-wing government for years) has always had a ban on foreign nationals so what part of my comment do you disagree with? Play the ball.

No one was talking about permanent residents, I was talking about foreign citizens who are here only on visas.

There's been a lot of hullabaloo in the past few years of people losing out at auctions to foreign investors, the latter should be outright banned from owning property in this country.

You said "only Australian citizens", which would exclude permanent residents who don't have Australian citizenship.
Permanent residents are fine but anyone who is not a citizen or permanent resident of this country should be outright banned from being able to buy property in this country.

No idea why this is a controversial topic, Canada who has an even more left-wing government than we do has these measures in place.

If you are going to make strong assertions then you need to make sure that those assertions reflect what you actually mean to say. As Toebash said, your initial comment said Australian citizens only, which by definition excludes permanent residents. So when you do make a fundamental mistake like this, don’t get further up on your high horse, eat a bit of humble pie instead.
And the Barnaby comment earlier was a reflection on the Beetrooter’s fuck up on the same subject yesterday.

It isn't a controversial topic now that you've explained your original misstatement.

I would say Canada’s government is similar if not less leftist than ours but I do agree. It’s ridiculous that foreigners can come in and buy all our homes then we wonder why we can’t afford to buy a home.
