Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

We have been trying to enter it since the 2020 comp. We were denied for that and the 2022 comp because we were too "superior". For 2024, "Australia, a member since 2013, did not enter the tournament, due to restriction imposed by the AFF"

In short, they don't want us. I agree that we should be playing in it though.

Playing Australia, the sub-confederation’s sole World Cup representative, would help lift standards and help other members compete/qualify for Asian and World Cup. Hopefully, Indonesia, Vietnam and others want the competition.

Would be a good tournament to take different places for internationals, such as Gosford, Townsville, Tasmania, Campbelltown

next edition of the ASEAN Championship (men's senior tournament), now known as the ASEAN Hyundai Cup due to a new title sponsor, is scheduled for July 25 – August 26

Christian Volpato was an unused sub for Sassuolo in a 0-0 draw with Lecce in Serie A.

Antonio Arena was not in the squad for Roma in Serie A.

Marin Jakolis started and was subbed in the 31st minute for FC Noah in a 0-0 draw with Urartu in the Armenian Top Flight.

Ayman Gulasi started and was subbed in the 61st minute for Schalke II in a 0-0 draw with Fortuna Koln in the German Fourth Tier.

This is a US/Mexico example of the dual national situation we're familiar with. It's so nuanced making these decisions. Never black and white. I reckon we need to treat it with more empathy and less anger at rejection.

I think the anger at the 'rejection' is when it's met with ridicule. I'm always an Australia over Italy guy - but it's when you're ridiculed by people in the exact same situation as you for doing so that grates on me (which is why I'm as anti-Volpato at the moment as possible).

Volpato definitely didn’t cover himself in glory w/that Instagram reel he conveniently deleted once he caught wind of the backlash.

In saying that, if I were Arnie I would’ve called him up for the Qatar ‘22 squad and promised him a place in the starting XI. You’ve gotta do what you can to lock in players eligible for multiple nations, as cheap as it comes across as.

Imagine if Eddie Thomson hadn’t locked in Harry Kewell for us in what was an otherwise-meaningless friendly against 🇨🇱 in ‘96..

Maybe Volpato's post can be put down to teenage attitude at the time? Can't remember which one, but there was a podcaster who knows Volpato and said that he was literally crying about the whole thing and that Volpato thought he wasn't good enough/would fail at senior international level. Who really knows what's going on? I wouldn't be surprised if he represents us next cycle, if called up.

I remember Arnie saying that he offered him a spot on the squad and even guaranteed him game time.

It’s a whole lot different now compared to when Kewell was playing. You can’t just lock a player up by subbing them on in a friendly so national federations aren’t really incentivised to chase young players on the off chance they become a first team regular. It’s up to the players now to make the commitment to the national team.

Volpato (and Triantis) are dead to me now. I don’t care what’s on their passport; they are not Australian.

I've said this before but I'm not going to hang a kid for making dumb comments. I did and said stupid shit when I was young. Probably worse was rejecting the Arnie call up later but these things are nuanced, personal and subject to other pressures. If he comes around to Australia I welcome it.

A few things need to happen before he can play for Australia. First he needs to decide who he wants to play international football for. If it's us then he needs to apply to FIFA to change his nationality as he has already played in official youth competition for Italy. Then he has to play well enough to get picked. It's really up to him. If he decides to play for us then thats great. If he decides otherwise that's his decision and good luck to him in his career.

Considering he is a dual-citizen, and has both passports, applying to FIFA to change his nationality (should he choose to go that route and come back to play for Australia) is basically a formality. Although, I believe he can only do this once in his career though.

Yes I agree. There is a loophole that lets one switch back again but if he decides our way it's unlikely to apply.

I feel like someone needs to actually interview Cristian Volpato about the whole situation.

If he isn't sorry for what he did after the Socceroos lost to Japan then he can get fucked, but I can forgive him if he wants to play for us as he would be a good addition.

I wonder if Roma and Sassuolo signing two Aussie girls this year (who actually represent the Tillies) is their way of saying sorry to us. It's a striking coincidence that Wini Heatley signing for Roma and both Jess Nash and Jacynta Gala signed for Sassuolo all within under two months (all unreal signings though!), and Cristian played for Roma before he went to Sassuolo. Wini signed on 9 July, Jess on 31 July and Jacynta on 17 August.

yeah even official media seem to have very little access to players these days in Australia
