Goes to one of the best academies in the world, keeps guys like Gravenberch out of the u21s, back in the NSL at 25?

How does this happen? How can he be so highly rated at that age and then vanish? What was it? Technical ability? Mental toughness? Lack of athleticism?

Seriously needs to be studied. Maybe someone on here knows more?

Talent at 17 is not a reliable indicator of a future career. When Lyon were good, their strategy was based around picking up talent around 22 years old, by this time most things have sorted themselves out and you get a better success rate.

The thing is though, until he was shafted and made to feel unwelcome, Australia was his first choice. He made that decision that he wanted to represent the Socceroos even though he knew he qualified for Greece. Ask yourself what happened to change that. He wore the Australia jersey with a lot of pride and spoke about what is meant to him. If not for Popovic's handling of things, he'd be still in the fold.

The June squad was obviously after the March squad which is where whatever happened...happened. So one can only assume that him turning down the June squad invite was as a result of that, so him not turning up is consistent with the narrative that Popovic and co obviously rightly or wrongly did something as a catalyst to his decision.

A lot of countries are looking at dual national players but we seem to going in a different direction which is odd considering how multicultural our country is, surely it should be a strength we should be valuing when picking players who are options to other countries.

for mine, it will most likely remain a case of he said/she said. maybe popa was brusque and contemptuously brushed him off and told him to get over it, or maybe triantis had a chip on his shoulder and subjectively took something personally (or maybe both, interpersonal relations are crazy complicated). as we are not a football obsessed country with that kind of media, i doubt it will ever come to light. either way, i hope he returns to the socceroos, we dont have the depth to happily discard players of his quality.

I agree that I remain hopeful that time heals all wounds and once Popa is gone who knows.

The FIFA lodged change of allegiance does seem final, and if not then majorly unneccesary.

That aussie scout thread was interesting, it listed even major teams that had sold their shirt to dual nationals

in robbos case I'm more sympathetic to the coaching staff. We did play him before he made his senior debut and he did his hammy so I'm not sure how available he was for the 2nd round of quals

not being selected for the asian cup while playing in league 1 isn't much of a grievance to be honest, even if you are playing pretty well

Agree. What's concerning is it's been awhile since we've lost out on dual nationals that would have made our National Team. Dykes then stretching back to Viera, Simunic, Seric. And to be fair those guys played for Countries that are elite in Europe (except Scotland). Now it's looking two or three in quick succession (Triantis, Robertson, Volpato). There's something structurally/ managerially/ strategically fucking up here imo.

And to be fair those guys played for Countries that are elite in Europe (except Scotland). Now it's looking two or three in quick succession (Triantis, Robertson, Volpato). There's something structurally/ managerially/ strategically fucking up here imo.

The FA need to invest in a scouting system it doesn’t have to be a full time gig even part time will do the job.

We seem to rely on the national team coach like Arnie and now Popa to look into players which as we know has its risks when it’s a job based on results.

Who knows how many Aussie eligible players are out there that the FA haven’t contacted to but they need to be onto this.

I do agree with this. He seems to have a massive chip on his shoulder expecting to walk into the team given what he has actually achieved so far and at which level, which is far from compelling. I'm not at all sold on him.

That said, I continue to be troubled by the fact that we are consistently pissing off dual national players when we need to be especially conscious of nurturing these relationships. I'm not advocating for us to gift caps to these players. But I do expect us to be communicating with these guys and taking every step to ensure they feel valued and have a future with the team. It almost feels like we're going to thr other extreme and we're so hyper conscious of not favouring these guys that we're actually treating them WORSE than our non- dual nationals. We constantly make mis-steps and fuck things up and shoot ourselves in the foot. We're on the verge of doing it again with Segecic if we're not very careful. Other less naive nations will be very quick to try to convince these guys to change allegiance. Popovic and whoever came before or after are simply custodians of our team.... the people's team... the nation's team. They have an obligation to be growing the team and keeping the best possible available talent in our stable, and that isn't happening right now. When we have guys who's father and grandfather wore the green and gold, and they then followed and also chose Australia... only for something big enough to happen to flip all that history upside down and choose to walk away, you need to wonder what is going on.

Keep in mind also that Peru haven't qualified for 2026 WC and we have, so he's obviously pretty pissed off to be walking away from that opportunity if this twitter post is true. He'll be 27 years old by the time of 2030 WC, if Peru manage to qualify.

Nah, he's still an Aussie. And a Peruvian. And an Englishman. And a Scotsman. And he will still be all of those things even if he gets to play for Peru in one or both of their scheduled November Friendlies (v Russia and then Chile).

He has no need to lodge a change of association request at this stage because he has never played anything other than Friendlies for England (at youth level) and Australia (at Senior National Team level).

Basically, he is a free agent in respect of his 4 Sporting Nationalities as he is not yet tied to any one of them. He will only be tied if he is selected for, and plays for in an official competition, the Senior National Team of one of those 4 countries. And once he is tied, if he ever is of course, it will be permanent. He will not have the option of subsequently requesting a change to another association

Weird to pick Peru over the Socceroos given Peru isn’t gonna be at the World Cup because of how bad they’ve been in the qualifiers.
