There are at least 10 dual Croatia/Australia players born between 2004-2008 that are currently playing senior football or junior in Croatia

More if you count those playing outside Croatia, including in the A-League, NPL and below. Technically, even though he’s not good enough, I would assume players like Keegan Jelačić are eligible. The rules are you can go up to parents and even as far as grandparents. Therefore few Gen Alpha (“kids these days”, born 2011-2020) and many Gen Z (1996-2010) would be eligible for countries like Croatia, Greece, Italy, Lebanon (if Christian), Malta, Serbia, etc. However, many will be eligible for China, India, etc.

Ironically, speaking of the fact that Sega isn’t very well-known by Croats yet, Ante Šuto was unheard of by Aussies until we found out he had an Aussie passport and was linked to Hibs, then eventually signed for them. It’s cool that we on this forum were some of the first to find out.

Arguments could be made by the Croatian side that they're not developing as many players at the rate and quality they'd like so it's best they look everywhere they can. Just like Australia should.

At the same time this is just one player for Croatia and they're simply proactive in ensuring best policy for their young players.

I wonder if it's Italy who scout the hell out of the place or its Croatian academies and agents sending information there or a bit of both.

Something doesn’t seem right when both Triantis and Segecic have chosen to turn their backs on Australia after previously being involved in Socceroos camps. There absolutely needs to be a review into how Football Australia/Popovic has handled these players. The organisation has a responsibility to safeguard the national team’s success not only in the short term but also in the long term, and losing these two players — along with Olyroos captain Pavlesic — who have been key players in the national youth teams is genuinely concerning.
