Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Im glad the reaction here is more mature compared to Twitter and reddit they just want to blame the kid.

Not sure what kind of people that would go these apps are clearly are not capable of thinking rationally lol.

Anyone from a mile away can see they dropped the ball on capping the kid, but fair play to Croatia they clearly take their duel nationals more seriously than us and this is a country that has made a World Cup final and semi final in the last two World Cup as well…
I think people on Reddit (presumably “he doesn’t identify as Australian”; haven't checked Reddit yet actually other than my own notifications) and Twitter (presumably “he’s not a real Aussie”; unlike the mostly left-wing Reddit, Twitter is mostly right-wing these days) keep missing the point that we’re angry because A. our depth has shrunk and we’ve lost a major talent AND B. we aren’t taking dual nationality seriously enough. It’s a serious issue: other countries with big diasporas are way more serious about it. Adrian Segečić has never declined a single Socceroos call-up and played in our youth teams since he was 15. He flew is family out to watch him sit on the bench. Tony Popović being Croatian too has nothing to do with it. Laziness and biased selections from our coaching staff and Football Australia is what got us here, not nationalism, racism nor sectarianism.

It's why I've always maintained when Arnie left we should've looked overseas for the next coach.

But effnikz?

So he cant even make the squad for arguably the worst croatian squad (still a good team tho) in 20 years and we should panic. He probably wouldve made our squad and gone to the wc

Fair enough. It's still pretty stark how much Croatia relies on its diaspora (not quite Curacao levels but very significant). I suppose when you have a small and declining population you need to pull whatever tricks are available.
I mean how many of our players do we rely on in exactly the same way!? Many of our current crop weren't born in Aus let alone ever even lived in Aus...and we have a population over 400% bigger than theirs. Fair play I say

My point is how people have the inability to think about it properly, instead of just blaming the player they can’t even comprehend how the federation or the coach doesn’t have a role in all of this as well.
So this becomes lazy and immature.

We need to move on but I’ve got serious question marks about how we handle duel national players in the future if they set the precedent already.

One player I reckon; Souttar is the only one who would be a serious miss from the squad who didn't play any of their junior football in Australia. I know Boyle has had a decent career with us but I don't rate him massively, certainly not any more.

Looking the other way, we've lost or will lose Dykes, Triantis, Segecic, Volpato and potentially Arena, so we're certainly losing more than we're gaining by a comfortable distance.

Playing robbo for a few minutes and calling up bennie is maybe a sign we have learnt. Lets see

They should have kept him and now he's working for Iraq with Arnie.
And now Iraq have scored some good dual internationals and are recruiting more. We need a guy like him in a specific role designated for recruiting dual internationals. I think we one missed out on two before Qatar 2022.
