Australia launches 2031 Asian Cup bid

AFC has a minimum capacity of 20,000 for an Asian Cup. Coopers is too small (it has been increased to 20000 on occasions) and Adelaide Oval isn't compliant for a competition (although one-off games are allowed).

Penrith is increasing to 25,000 and Central Coast Stadium to a 365 day use 30,000+ stadium by 2030 (eateries, bars, etc facing a new Dane Drive plaza). The Stadium use at the moment may not warrant it but it is being looked at as part of a transport, development and waterfront strategy. This would probably place it between the Newcastle and Melbourne stadiums. Pretty wild when you think those two will be bigger than the largest in Melbourne and Western Sydney

TBH that is what Adelaide probably needs - an urban redevelopment site that a stadium can anchor for new housing and transport infrastructure.

These are the 'rectangular' stadiums in front of Adelaide.

See why couldn’t Newcastle get games at the Asian Cup this year? 🤦‍♂️

Doesn't help the SA Government has been bumbuddies for the AFL for decades.

Women's Asian Cup is a lot smaller, 12 teams 27 matches. vs 24 teams and 51 matches. BTW I also left out CBUS and WIN Stadium. So Hindmarsh slips further down the list.
AFC also insists on seats, no standing areas. Thats why Marathon was limited to around 23,000 in the 2015 Asian Cup (the hills on the end were left vacant) and WIN also has a large hill area still. CBUS would be a good place though.

GWS - Blacktown and then the Showgrounds. Heap of AFL in QLD as well
I’m not saying people don’t follow AFL in the ACT, NSW and Queensland. I’m saying their governments are closer with the NRL than the AFL.

I was looking at it from an SA standpoint as I've lived down here for a decade now.
Oh I was replying to Pat’s comment. I don’t think the NSW Government gives a fuck about the AFL if it means threatening the NRL.

Well they funded them a field at Blacktown and when they had a sook and said we don't want to go further than the Ryde Bridge (hardly the Greater West) they then funded the upgrade of the Showground at Homebush.

Fair but the NSW Government also did (and admittedly did quite well in) funding the World Cup and Asian Cup in Sydney. They also got the A-League Grand Final in Sydney for a few years. However, their priorities clearly go to rugby league first.

Not quite. My nephew lives in Adelaide and one of our best customer have their HQ in Adelaide. Between 2018 and 2021 I would spent about half a year each year in Adelaide. Also done WA and overseas stints.
Well what was the snide comment for?

Granted it's not as good as when I arrived here from Sydney a decade ago but I'd still rather be here than live in the crime-riddled dump that is Melbourne.
