He was a poor ref. Every game we had something up with the refs in 06. Merk pulled up Viduka way too much and Kewell berated him at full time.
Merk was rediculous, fouling us when the brazillians committed the infringement

having said that, I think he probably should've given grella a red

so it all evens out in the end and fussing over refs decisions is overblown

Was Materazzi really a red? Was it more the challenge or DOGSO? I felt there were other Italians around to cover.
Mainly the challenge I thought at the time... sitting in an Italian bar surrounded by Italians, wearing my Oz shirt.

They applauded me and Mrs C before the match but things were getting ugly after the red card.

I might have it wrong (19 years later) - maybe it was at full time, but it doesn't change the potential psychology of a ref who'd realised mid-match that he'd made a major error.

When I watch the replay it looks so far away from the goal. Bresciano kicks it away and there are other players there. Felt like a yellow at best.

Look at Viduka's dip of shoulder and head when the red comes out. What's that about? It's almost like he knew the ref was nuts.

One thing this shows is that having ex-players running VAR isn't necessarily going to improve the situation. Jay Bothroyd demonstrates in this video that he has little idea about the detail and intent of the laws of the game and how VAR is meant to operate and intervene.

Edit: Also, and this is neither here nor there, he comes across as a bit of a fuckwit!

The fact is there are decisions that are subjective and there'll never be agreement even between refs. Some of the biggest arguments I’ve seen and been a part of are between refs about decisions. Go to refchat.co.uk and watch them go at it. No prisoners taken and there's quite a few high level blokes there.

I've watched Neil foul, or not foul, Grosso a hundred times and depending on who's arguing I've agreed it is and it was never a foul. I still don't know.

Kewell's supposed handball on the line vs Ghana is another one I'll never have a definitive opinion on. (And I was at that game.)

The 4 considerations for DOGSO are:

Direction. yes met
Distance. yes met
Defenders. no not met (there was a defender)
Control (likelihood of) unlikely

Based on that, red was harsh. YC was probably more correct. Its what they call an 'orange' card.

Anyway Hiddink lost its that game by only making the one sub at the 82nd minute. What the hell was he waiting for?

Oh to have had ET with the fresh legs. Even just for the sport science aspect of how fresh we would've appeared.

Thats what I don't get though. Imagine 3 fresh subs running at them from 75 on. Its not like they'd run out of puff if it went to ET. Huge missed opportunity.

Up there with Venables not bringing a defender on when we were 2 up and Gustavson not rotating our squad costing us a place in the final.

Fully agree, the nature of football is such that there are always a significant number of subjective decisions. It’s one of the reasons why I hate VAR in the game, as in many cases, even on video, the decision is not cut and dried. I’d rather have the referees decide and get it wrong occasionally, than be held up with VAR and stifle the celebrations, when even with VAR so many things are subjective. Particularly as VAR now, and probably always, has not just been used to eliminate the clangers, as was the original stated intent, but is in many cases re-refereeing the game.

First time I've been able to watch that in 20 years - jees football does that to you
