I'm perplexed too?I wonder why JH felt that he needed the move. To me it looked like he walked out on Macarthur and dipped his toes in Europe. Either he has been advised to go down this path, Macarthur didn't want him, or he felt his options were running out. In which case my response would have been to get a different manager.
Not wanting to digress, but often NPL players have a better life over a life span than pro players. You really wonder who is advising Robertson on his career moves. But you also have to wonder why better clubs have not been coming calling for him. The idea that he was holding back on Australia because of the possibility of playing for England looks a long way away now. Its a brutal world, pro football. As a parent, you would have to think carefully before directing your kids down that path.

NPL players often have careers as well. When they retire from football, life does not change much, like it does for former pros in a range of sports, who don't have a trade or profession.
Many former pro sportspersons suffer from depression. The moment they retire, they often become nobodies, or just the average person on the street. Coaches stop contacting them - so do club officials, media, other players, etc. Social networks disappear - unless coaching.
Of course very rich players who've had many seasons in the UEFA Big Five are pretty wealthy, and can live off sage investments for the rest of their life.
Agree. And that's where the stats are most dire.Poor Ronaldo...
I suspect it's hardest for lower league players who've made enough to live on throughout their careers but are suddenly turned adrift with not very much and a new life/career to build.
