Aussies abroad 🌍🦘

Irankunda likely to get minutes tonight vs Deportivo La Coruna, according to the Watford forum.
The Watford head coach has said Nestory Irankunda will be on managed minutes to ensure that he's ready for the start of the season and that he'll play around 20 minutes, per the club website.

St John started for St Pauli II in 5:0 season opener loss.

Ferencváros advance but not after a back and forth. They face Ludogrets next who are seasoned and tricky. So many rounds and safety nets in euroea now. Lose and they go to the Europa League Playoff round.

I wonder why JH felt that he needed the move. To me it looked like he walked out on Macarthur and dipped his toes in Europe. Either he has been advised to go down this path, Macarthur didn't want him, or he felt his options were running out. In which case my response would have been to get a different manager.
I'm perplexed too?

JH did well in the AL polls of best player in the A League for last season - with I suspect quite a few ex players/current coaches involved in voting - who know a lot about football and have good insights.

You really wonder who is advising Robertson on his career moves. But you also have to wonder why better clubs have not been coming calling for him. The idea that he was holding back on Australia because of the possibility of playing for England looks a long way away now. Its a brutal world, pro football. As a parent, you would have to think carefully before directing your kids down that path.

Once again appreciate all the posts from posters providing info on all the Aussies playing abroad.

Thanks.

This is the only place I get to see many reports of Aussies playing overseas - in the same place.

Not wanting to digress, but often NPL players have a better life over a life span than pro players.

NPL players often have careers as well. When they retire from football, life does not change much, like it does for former pros in a range of sports, who don't have a trade or profession.

Many former pro sportspersons suffer from depression. The moment they retire, they often become nobodies, or just the average person on the street. Coaches stop contacting them - so do club officials, media, other players, etc. Social networks disappear - unless coaching.

Of course very rich players who've had many seasons in the UEFA Big Five are pretty wealthy, and can live off sage investments for the rest of their life.

Yes, depression among ex footballers in the UK has been of concern for a long time.

Imagine someone even as rich as Ronaldo, whose entire persona is built on playing football. At some point, Ronaldo will have to retire, and it is going to be very hard for him.

Likewise, it must be very challenging for players who, like Robertson, are so hyped as youngsters, only to slide down the playing ladder. Brisbane Roar's latest UK import is classic example. I honestly have no idea how good Robertson is, but he has not benefited from the hype of his teenage years. He will need reserves of psychological toughness to fight his way back from League 1.

Realistically, he will need a move to the Championship, then 2 good seasons to either get promoted with his team or to catch the eye of a lower level EPL team. Logically, if he gets that final move, by that time he will be 26. As I said, a brutal world, and the clock is always ticking loudly.

As some have suggested, a move to Europe looks the better option.
