I guessed as much. I do remember him making the squad and while that was well received I don't recall the clamour for him to be included as there was for Arzani and Kuol. Did he actually play?

Interestingly, there is no-one this time who springs to mind as a young tyro tearing the place apart and demanding inclusion (it would have been Segecic had he not discovered himself to be Croatian). Younis is probably closest but there's no way he excites everyone the way Arzani and Kuol did.
 
Burns had a decent season at AEK and then never did any better than that. Like oar peaked very young but if he followed his expected trajectory for someone getting regular game time at the level that early should have been a much better player.

It's mysterious why this happens. In the end you need to have a lot of wunderkids to get a good generation. Probably 3-4 for every position for one to come good

He played 26 games over 4 years but spent a season on loan elsewhere and scored 8 goals. Talk about the level perhaps but again it's going to bigger clubs where you suddenly become a small fish at a critical development stage. It's interesting when you compare it with Burgess's rise through the EFL, Elder too. They went places they could play all the time and developed as they were playing constantly.

25 games in all competitions for AEK in 2010/2011 which looked super promising. Wasn't to be

Minutes in all competitions this season total 11.5 matches. An upgrade on past seasons but still nowhere near enough. It may be Sparta Prague but this is where League One or Liga 3 has a lot more football on offer where the vast majority of the league is at a similar standard except for the big few in the Czech league.

I was surprised to see a few years bac how low the Czech leagues record transfer fee abroad was. It might have skyrocketed since then. I suppose a lot of Czech talents head abroad at a younger age like Hungary.

gee we were desperate to hype anyone up back then

I think to be a wunderkid you need to dominate the a league by 21 (9+ goals a season for an attacking position, 13+ for a striker, more complicated for deeper positions) or get regular european football by 23 at a club that has an elo of at least 1400

We have had a lot of trouble producing players that are tripple threats - mentally tough, athletically impressive and technically sound. To make the big 5 regularly you need all 3 and we have only produced 11ish players in our history that fulfil those categories (though I can't comment on socceroos playing before 1991 since I haven't watched games from the 80s)

It's guys like Culina and Wilkshire who get the job done. They kept their heads down and focused on business. Neither were considered the big names but they did plenty of good things at world cups of the back of steady club careers. Wilkshire's time in Russia shouldn't be overlooked.
 
Kenny Dougall starts for Buriram United as captain in their ASEAN Club Championship semi-final second leg game against Johor Darul Ta'zim, as does Curtis Good.
