Auckland gave Roar a cream pie, I predicted a 3k crowd but looked more then that for once.
Moved from Round 11 thread:
We were outclassed in lengthy periods but we were entirely lacking in urgency and drive after the goal was conceded so early and right up until about the 80th minute when we started to play again.
I cannot understand the lack of drive throughout a game when we are a goal down. Slow passing, little movement, most often passing backwards - and not to safety - just passing backwards as an option. Best description would be a game plan where we go a goal up early and work on slow and deliberate attacks to maintain possession without pushing forward hard - except we were a goal down and forgot to change to the goal down plan.
Hore was much more effective and involved tonight without either Ruhs (Bench) or Vidic (out) on the park. Part of that was probably because O'Shea was out injured and Klein was given the more forward facing role. He and Hore (sound like a pair of donkeys) did work more positively in the middle third - although most of the game was passing in the back third for us.
Long reminded us what he can do for power with his shot sailing high and wide but very flat and powerful. Wishing we used our midfield to bring him into games instead of hoofing it high to him under close pressure.
A second game with a stupid back post defence on a corner. Bloody man mountain Cosgrove at the back post and we don't think to try and put some height or muscle in the way? Bility got half piggybacked out of his way but it just wasn't a strong enough effort by the team to guard that back post. Doesn't need more than we have seen for other teams to put a big guy on the back post against us until we sort it out better.
Second goal you would have to be blind not to see it coming. Brook (very much like Lolley) cutting inside on the right wing and only a single tired player trying to stop him. I called the goal before he even started to line up his shot because that is exactly what Brook does and does well.
Loved Faghani ignoring Cosgrove dropping. Didn't love Faghani not issuing a second yellow card on I think Howieson for his very obvious professional grapple up the wing when we would have been away. Would have been a first yellow for sure - but not 'worth' a second.
MacNicol shone when he came on. For some reason we started passing through the middle for the first time all night and lo and behold our forward had a chance to receive and create. So frustrating that we have the team and the skill to play such good football and we are just not applying ourselves to the task until the last 10-20 minutes of games. Had a better look at MacNicol and I think he might have put on another 6 inches or so since last season along with just filling out normally. Still a slim looking bugger but starting to look a bit more rangy than boy like.
Bility played like he used to - some excellent things and some really scary things. Unfortunately he has been more Lia than Noah for the last couple of games and I worry that his decision making is so poor at critical times. Have to keep coming back to him being like Jurman when he played for us. I can hope he will improve but I worry he will cost us too much until then.
Ruhs showed his strength and speed when he came on. We finally started to push through the wings with him instead of once again playing a gameheavily laced with Bouzanis Long ball. Ruhs runs in the same spaces that Hore does his best work - which is a shame. Makes it hard to play both when either or both will be limited by them both being on.
Shaw's short appearance once again showed some quality. I think we will see more and more of him and I look forward to maybe seeing another up and coming youngster in him.
And on to the two real highlights of the night...and both of them off field.
9363 fans in the stands and a magnificent effort in voice by the Den. They rocked the stadium with their full voice Brisbane call. Loved it.
A nod to the Auckland supporters tucked away in their little corner. Kept at it all night and obviously appreciated by their team.
In summary we got beaten by quality Auckland moments, dominated by a better passing side when we have it in us to be that dominating passing side, and lacklustre, flat plays where everyone in orange was waiting to see what someone else was going to do before any ball got passed or move was made. We are playing like strangers.
