2027 Asian Cup

Depending on injury and regular club minutes, Aus could play a 5-4-1 without the ball, and a 4-3-3 with it - like Netherlands did in the WC group rounds.

............................. Beach

Italiano.........Circati.......Souttar..........Bos

..............O'Neill..................Okon Jr
..........................Robertson

Volpato...............Toure................McGree

in Possession for the Asian Cup.

Of course, Irank could replace any of the front three, but only O'N, Souttar and McGree, arguably Circati, have sufficient international/club experience.

Herrington also increases pressure on the 2 CBs. As does Leonard if he plays regular Bundi minutes.

I beg to differ. I might have said it before, but went back over a game where JS96 listed many exact moments that Behich supposedly messed up.

JS96 was right a few times, but in doing so, Strain made a lot of mistakes!

I think Arnie's greatest mistake was overlooking Geria at RB.
I remember it differently. Strain did very well ... against England, was it?

Good to hear, but how tough was the opposition?

Still love hearing this!
Dylan is better at progressive carries although Lucas still has a light frame, both great tackling ball winners, both have technical ability miles ahead of the average Australian player. Lucas probably attempted more progressive passes than his brother, will break out this season if given the gig at number 6.

I think now Italiano has overtaken Miller as first choice RWB.

Someone else pointed it out initially, but Italiano's jockeying and delaying of two different superb Turkish left wingers, very good at dribbling, both with blond hair, was outstanding. It was.

Italiano makes better, proactive runs to support ball carriers than Miller too. Although Miller is good to have if there is an overly rugged left side opposition player, bullying us. Miller is an aerial threat too.

Italiano has better technique on the ball.
I agree. The point of my post was about the 2nd choice right back which is wide open.

Strain's England game was great. He still has it. Just needs to shake off injuries.

Elder was injured every single window with something minor so it's nit harsh treatment rather very bad luck.

I wouldn't be taking him anyway. He's a wrestler more than a footballer. Need to advance Overy and RBR. Bennie too.
I understand where you're coming from as I think that Miller moves more like an Aussie Rules defender than a footballer. However in my opinion in the months before his injury he was showing that he is still improving and still somewhat off his ceiling.

Perfect pick in a squad who can play both centre defence and on the right.
This generation's Mat Leckie? I used to think the same of him back in 2014-15 - although not as much as a 'wrestler', but someone that could run all day and hold their own, with not so much visible general football skill.

Falkirk were promoted and are now in the Scottish Premiership.
This has already been mentioned to Decentric in previous posts where he commented incorrectly on Strain being with Falkirk in the second tier. But as per usual he just continues on with his same old shtick.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Ryan,Gauci and Hall if they can secure a move and gametime.
I can see pressure on Ryan to skip the Asian cup if he' not going to start and focus on new club instead of sitting on Australias bench during a busy part of club season.

One injury or red card can see a very quick change in keeper availability so Ryan should always be there. Not to mention his mentoring. Gauci is a reliable squad member and maybe Chapman among others will add to the depth.

I'd be okay with Miller as one of the 2 RCB options, providing we can find someone in the starting 11 who can provide good set-piece deliveries. Miller would be a threat in the box under those circumstances against Asian opponents. As you say, I'd like to see either Overy, RBR or perhaps Benni - depending on form over the next few months - to be selected along with Italiano as the rwb options. Miller only as an emergency option during the tournament at rwb.
This !

I actually quite like Miller. Old fashioned agricultural footballer, but very effective. In our system though where the wingbacks require speed anc crossing ability i dont think its his best role. His best positions imo are RB (true right back) or RCB in a three. As a backup to Circati i think hes a great option.

RWB and CF are the positions we really need to start testing sone options with. Id try Arena, and Marcus Neill at cf and James Overy at rwb.

Maybe Raphael, Silvera and Bennie at RWB too.

My 26 man Asian Cup squad if picking today..

1st 11.. Beach
Circati Souttar Herrington
Italiano O'Neill Okon Bos
Volpato Irankunda
Toure

2nd 11.. Ryan
Miller Stensness Burgess
Bennie Robbo Devlin Metcalfe
Younis McGree
Sapsford

4 extras... Hall, Overy, Kuol, Arena.

Emergencies. Leonard, G Okon, Skoko, Borges, Chipperfield, Rose and Neill. (i'd be trying out all these guys though in the next friendlies).

I've left out stalwarts in Izzo, Geria, Degenek, Irvine, Behich, Nish, Hrustic, Leckie and Mabil but none of these are pushing for best 11 imo and as such we should try the wonderkids who arguably are already on par with them and could be better at least with time.

Good on him for improving in some areas but it's frustrating Popovic created a system to accommodate him. At least Italiano is better but I'd hoped we'd revert to a back 4 with Miller out. We kept going to him as our build up starter. Compare his passing to the world cup back 3.

He's woeful on the ball, mistimes tackles and is only good on the ground and in the air but that's an area we can sacrifice for a more nimble RWB. Having him in a back 3 is just asking for penalties.

Perfect archetype for Socceroo football. Select him for life!

If Miller is back playing each week for Blackburn he walks into the squad and probably starts. None of these other guys are close at this stage.

Others have mentioned them before I thought of them, but both Metcalfe and Villupillay have the skill sets for back up wing backs on either flank.
