2025 Australia Cup final rounds thread

On merit, yes. But could they survive with just 1,500 turning up? That's the big question. Probably need at least double that.
So my thoughts are: Wellington and wanderers should get all the criticism but Heidelberg suits or jackets whatever they wear what the fuck are they doing to get people into the ground?

1,500 at a quarter final the state of the sport in this country

Look Im not fan of NPL teams but it was played on a Tuesday night, people have to work the next day and kids have to go to school. Try getting A-League fans to turn up for a Tuesday night game?.
Then have it on a weekend. Gosh so sick of the excuses just want to see people supporting the competition don't care who organizes it

Great effort and skill by the Bergers, but I am going with a more unpopular view of games like this in the bigger picture.

It really is still pre-season for the Aleagues teams and there are so many factors at play with tired NPL legs after a ridiculously heavy load, obvious blunt attacks by the unsharpened aleagues teams like the Nix, and green squads in team dynamics against match forged expert teams.

Nix had nothing at the pointy end, despite creating enough chances to make a game of it. They blazed away with useless shots and I would even consider Rufer's shot, that went out for a throw in after being taken in the final third of the field and straight in front, to be the result of players not yet in match form and not just a defender's shot.

Bergers on the other hand were sharp, fast, desperately hungry and proud and mostly ruthless when they had their moments.

I also consider the lack of VAR to be a huge disadvantage to aleagues teams used to it. They play a 'cleaner' game of football because they know they will get hung by their actions. When they get down and dirty in the muddy trenches of NPL, where you sometimes have to drag the player gripping you 10 metres before laying off a pass, and running through swiping legs is a skill, they are often outclassed; having had most of the dark side beaten out of them by a sanitised version of media scrutinised football.

Have you seen Salute of the Jugger? No non-league challenger has ever gone more than 20 stones...
Watching aleagues teams being beaten by 'lower' tier clubs (I acknowledge there are many who do not consider NPL a lower tier really) reminds me of the big game at the end of that movie. The polished pros with all expectation.

And by the final rounds of the Australia Cup we have the balance going back the other way - with NPL clubs out of season and aleagues clubs coming into some form.

These are not excuses and my point is not about today's game - won by an obviously superior skilful and well organised team. It is about any comparison of leagues on the basis of these games. Pit a Round 20 Nix against a Round 20 Bergers and we are talking apples with apples - and I would love to see that happening.

The format and timing of the Cup creates part of the Magic of the Cup. In a game where 90 minutes and a round ball (thanks for the words Mono) can produce any result imaginable or unimaginable, to also have the 'lesser' team in form and the pros still waking up allows for so much more fairness and fantasy.

Roll on the Cup!

Even though those bastard Bergers cost me a tipping point too.

Very old fan base, i have no idea how this football is not getting bigger crowds.
Its a tuesday night turnout and its logical but yes it is low by any standard. The crowd was relatively young tonight mixed with the older ... Same reasons apply to bergers as other NPL sides... wellington had 2 fans there max! Next round vs sydney fc would show actual numbers if its managed on a weekend... then its open to criticism..

If the semi doesnt get 3k its a disaster. Cant see it being weekend think it falls during the finals in a few weeks.

Champions league games kick off at 20.45 and 21.00 on the continent, and they still manage big crowds.

If the semi doesn’t fill the place to the rafters, it will also be a disaster and a massive set back for this club wanting promotion and relegation.

Burgers for the boys!

Congrats to the Burgers for another great result against an a-league side.

They play great football as well, I’m surprised a-league sides haven’t looked at their talent they look like they play at that level.

Its also a concern for these a-leagues sides too given they have gone backwards in level whilst the NPL teams have improved.

The championship might have come at good time for aus football I feel.

You watched Nix tonight vs bergers and can tell me A league clubs play a cleaner game and are disadvantaged bc there is no VAR? Its a miracle Lesiotis still has legs to stand on after that midfield... VAR probably wouldve rubbed out a couple Auckland players last round also if used correctly vs South..

The scandal is that nobody is looking at the coach John Anastasiadis, dont know what the bloke has to do to get a look in. Some of those players were absolute rubbish 2 years ago before he arrived, every one of them look like world beaters now.

Agree

Apparently to some since champions league on the football crazy continent can get crowds mid week at night should be more than enough reason why the NPL clubs at the arse end of the world should also (same ppl that make excuses for a league clubs not getting even those crowds on the weekend matches!!)

Hypocricy at its greatest!

Anglicize and shorten his surname perhaps! 🤣

He’s a very good coach wasn’t he an assistant under Ange?
