"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

The game of football has grown massively in the last 30 years, if you can't see that, that is your fault
The recent WC was massive, never seen interest that big, the Matildas are also massive, the Asian cup and Olympics are also followed
The O/S competitions are followed with 80K to 100k attending.
I see more kids with premier league kits than any AFL merch.
Lots of NRL fans and players follow EPL sides.

Shock horror! I think most people are somewhat muzzled by their employer while they are working for them and being able to more freely express your opinions after moving on is normal no?
What an awful thing for him to say! As an Asian I’m deeply offended (not!).
Are there many Asians at South Melbourne games? I doubt it

No, not really, I follow the biggest and best sport in the world, I follow the Socceroos, Matildas, Sydney FC, Derby County, Portugal, Porto, the PL, LA Liga and all the Aussies playing O/S. Leaves little time for other sports, but I enjoy Rugby Union, swimming, cycling and fleeting Rugby league.

The NRL has the highest TV ratings on Australian sport, but you dislike the game. So maybe you should concern yourself of your own paradox.

It’s literally the only thing I envy you lot up north for, although the holistic merit of the continued NSW/Sydney-centricness of 🇦🇺⚽️ in this day&age is a separate discussion for another day💡

I must admit to noticing a fair few at South’s Australia Cup home-games these past two months actually, as w/the Australian Championship last year. Plus the Paramount coverage of the last match vs. Preston zeroed in on this one particular Asian chick behind the goals😍

These days ?
More like since the EPL started and United won so much - LFC was long time popular here it all compounded more moving forwards.
Then the Messi/Barca CR7/RM fandom etc kits have been popular for decades on the streets and at training grounds.
Maybe Melb burbs didn’t have as such compared to up north.

Back in 2011 when Oz was bidding for the 2022 World Cup (I know, I know...) my publisher was invited to a secret meeting.

He was one of 100 people who were regarded as AFL thought leaders - in his case, because he'd published a couple of AFL books as well as my Mr Cleansheets.

He wasn't an AFL man though. He'd been born in Sunderland and was football through and through. But he accepted the invitation to the Crown Casino where Eddie Maguire and Andrew Demetriou led the meeting. Their message was that if football won the World Cup, their game was dead.

Obviously, that is ridiculous but that's the length they went to. (Eddie exhorted them all to do all they possibly could to ensure Oz did not get the World Cup.) And the FIFA technical committee gave Oz a black mark on other code and stadia compliance given how the AFL played hard ball. They would have actually received the best benefit from stadia development if we had won the bid.

So yes, they fear us - probably because the world continues to shrink and football gets bigger and bigger while their boring game continues to thrive in one country only.

It can’t be said too often, Eddie McGuire is a duplicitous vagina-hat when it comes to his ‘relationship' with ⚽️. And yet he still manages to hoodwink enough of us into thinking we aren’t ideologically at odds..

There’s this snippet on YouTube of his and Karl Stefanovic’s sports-podcast where they had Robbie Slater on as a guest a while back, and Bulldog was lowkey buttering-up Eddie like "what a friend to sokkah you are unlike others from your code", etc.🤣🤣

I am not envious of that kind of job where having an audience your lips are tied in fear of your job - your paid not just to toe the line but you can express on issues without the element of risk - that type of employer is a bully in today’s employment.
Commentators are spokespersons of the game might I add - we need people not to fear but question the establishment and counter the other media persons backlash.
I respect people who put their necks out with smarts and I’m happy doing so as well.
Sour grapes - for a person who comes across quite intelligent your assumption is off the mark.
Carry on KW no offense taken but disappointed how you read between the lines.
