Burgess was really bad today. Just looked way off the pace. And the own goal was ridiculous. He had more time to set his feel or at least hit it with his right than he seemed to think. I guess Beach put him off by sort of half coming out, but it was still bad.

Bos was terrible in the first half, but at least made a couple of runs in the second.

Old Leckie is useless. He’s got nothing without speed. I have no idea why he’s even in the squad.

Volpato was good! Popa was our worst by far.

Not blaming him, i meant in regards to the offside, Beach is still on the ground as the scorer is running in to head the ball in. Its not like the offside player was obstructing him.

That's fair enough. He's moved towards and arguably startles the keeper. Actively alters his decision making.

Make what you will of this - but IFAB’s wording:

  • interfering with an opponent by:
    • preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
    • challenging an opponent for the ball or
    • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
    • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

I would place it under the last point

He was indecisive for the first. He should have either committed to coming for the ball or stayed in position. Instead he made a half-hearted half-move to come out, which just made Burgess panic.

And he was nowhere for the second. I think he could have done much better on both.

There’s an obvious reason he was nowhere for the second though.

But fair point on the first goal
 
Still trying to work out the offside. Yes the scorer is not offside, but Balogun also goes for the ball. Is he not playing for the ball and part of the play? As a keeper, if I have two players running towards me, I'm worried about both. Trying to position and get in a way that I can cover both.

Burgess was perfectly placed, had he just swept away with his right the dangers gone. Surely defenders of his level/experience can manage that? For the second, Dest was allowed to a have picnic for one on the edge of our box, then the deflection change the trajectory Beach had correctly commit to.
 
Seriously, what was the deal with the handball? Why wasn’t it even mentioned in the broadcast or checked by VAR? Why didn’t our players remonstrate? The ball came down onto the American’s outstretched arms. It looked like a clear pen to me so I was a bit shocked by the lack of reaction from anyone.

If Souttar or any other guys in that position it wouldn't be an own goal. This is like copy and paste to the Japan away game.

I think we're all aware had that been at the other end the goal wouldn't of stood.

Yes that’s the way I see it too - but i assume VAR has decided because he didn’t actively make an action towards the ball (eg, jump for the header) that he is not involved in the play.
I think him being that close at all is involved though. Anything within a metre of the ball is 99% offside offence to be honest
 
Seems like Poppa's gambling backfired, Metcalf, Irankunda, Volpato and Irvine made a big difference when they came on.
Burgess had a game to forget, same with Bos tbh.
It's pretty hard playing the host nation and one that is hitting form, with Leckie out does another player come in, who would it be?
 
A result like this was on the cards. Only really paying attention to Aus football, I did not realise the US have even better quality across the park. At home they are expected to win against us.
But that first half performance was pretty limp. Popa out coached tactically. Graz it seems like they came in and did exactly what you were worried about on the podcast.
