Matilda's abroad

You rarely see huge wins (4–0 or more) in the Dub, even in games like City vs Wanderers, so I’d say no. The players probably put in more effort week in week out knowing they could get a raise. Either way it’s gotta change, they have to be paid at least $100,000 if not much more per year. If they’re only making $25,000 a year on average then I make more far money than the average Dub player which is crazy cause I’m an ordinary bloke in Sydney.
What would be a sustainable wage for an ALW player ?

I expected this, though I don’t expect Caitlin Foord to renew. Her and her partner (Katie McCabe) are both probably leaving (likely for the NWSL). Sam Kerr will go with them alongside her son Jagger and her partner Kristie Mewis who I think is retired now as she hasn’t played since she was at West Ham where she mostly sat on the bench. But who knows, maybe LCL will snatch them up with Michelle Kang’s money.

The base wage in the Northern Super League is about $50,000 so even if we matched that it would be a big improvement but the problem is the club owners see the women’s teams as a drain on resources.
$50,000 is a big improvement though that still means the players are relatively poor in today’s world. That’s just over the Australian annual minimum wage though it’s double the current average A-League Women player’s salary. While you do pay less taxes at $50,000 a year, things like groceries and fuel are pretty expensive (though petrol and even diesel prices are finally dropping thankfully).

So the bottom line is that our female players are being paid half the minimum wage so is that even legal?

I’d say so given volunteering (working for free) is legal in some capacities. Championship/NPL players are also semi-pro so they’re not alone. But yeah they really do need to be paid above minimum wage and not have to work two jobs. Maybe $85,000? That’s relatively normal and working or middle class these days.

So does that create an unequal competition given that most players are having to juggle playing, training and travelling to games whilst also having to take second jobs just to exist.
The competition is already unbalanced as Melbourne City have won the last three Premiers' Plates and the vast majority of Matildas players in the national team setup have come from the City organisation, but to be fair competitive balance has improved somewhat over the past two seasons as more sides are winning matches and reaching the finals series despite the fact that most players still have to juggle football with having a second job due to the semi-professional nature of the Dub.

Except City haven’t won the championship in any of those, and while the new players may mostly come from City the old ones come from Sydney. The Dub is far more competitive than any of the big European leagues.

Agree that the Dub is more competitive than leagues like Frauen-Bundesliga and Liga F which may be considered farmers' leagues as we have a mix of teams winning the grand final as opposed to sides winning multiple titles in a row, with the last team to do so being Sydney FC in seasons 2022-23 and 2023-24 but to be fair Melbourne City have the most marquee players in the entire comp and Holly McNamara is the first player since Sam Kerr to win the Golden Boot in back-to-back seasons which shows that there is still a lack of balance in terms of player development as well as recruitment.

‘ player development’ that’s the key word. If a club is able to pay its players enough so that they don’t need to work a second job then there can be more time for development. This leads to more coordination in that team’s game.

Hana Lowry not in the matchday squad altogether for Valerenga in their Toppserien game against Stabaek, which is their matchday 14 game being played early.

Did it get postponed cause I thought that was last weekend?
They played against Stabaek on Saturday local time but this is the return leg which is meant to be their matchday 14 game and is being played early because Valerenga have to go through UWCL qualifying in August when everyone else has their matches.

Caitlin Foord on the bench for Arsenal in their WSL game against Leicester City. Emily van Egmond starts for Leicester City. Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross both not in the matchday squad altogether for Arsenal.

Emily van Egmond started and played 70 minutes for Leicester City in their 7-0 WSL loss to Arsenal before being subbed off. Caitlin Foord came on in the 52nd minute for Arsenal.
