The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

I won't be satisfied until we start both Iredales, Goodwins and Toures in a game.

I'm starting to get a little worried by our stocks at centre half. Burgess and Circati are clearly locks, but:
  1. Souttar is long term injured.
  2. Rowles' form appears to have dropped off a cliff.
  3. Degenek isn't a guaranteed first team starter for the team coming 12th in Serbia.
  4. Geria isn't a guaranteed first team starter for the team coming dead last in Japan.
  5. Kai Trewin appears to have moved into defensive midfield.
  6. Hayden Matthews is yet to establish himself and keeps getting injured too.
Miller and Iredale can play RCB and LCB respectively, and I anticipate that Popovic might explore that with Circati on the physio bench, but I'm not sure we have the cattle for a 5 man backline at the moment.
A bit of a thinning with the injuries but now we can call in the other stock and it's still handy. I get they're not shining in club land but they've been tidy for the national team.

Elder is certainly better as a LWB so it's Iredale for a LCB game if he plays.

I'm not so concerned.

Burgess is rock solid.

Circati's injury will have him rehabbed before the world cup.

Souttar will return soon.

Rowles form I would say is good, departure of opinion there.

Degenek always seems to step up for the national team. Club form a worry, I agree.

Matthews has returned from injury.

Iredale is a regular starter with good club form.

Stensness has returned from injury.

Elder and Karacic have played in back 3s before. Miller currently is if we want to go there.

Geria - yeah I'm concerned about his club situation, but he's been good for the national team.

Only missed opportunity is Farell who I'd have loved to see.

Depth chart:

LCB: Burgess, Rowles, Iredale, Elder
CB: Circati, Souttar, Mathews, Trewin, Grant
RCB: Degenek, Geria, Stensness, Karacic (Miller)

Welcome to the forum, Toebash.

Respectfully disagree with 2. Rowles has done very well at Left Wing Back - defensively. I've done a lot of data compilation and Rowles has been quite a surprise at Left WB. Obviously doesn't have Bos' attacking prowess, but solid defensively and good on the ball.

4. Astonishing about Geria? He has done well for the Roos recently.

3. Deg has struggled against big, strong forwards in 1v1s. Has done well positionally.

5. Trewin doing well in both DM and CB.

I'm not so concerned.

I think you made a comment on RB and RWB, Quicky.

ATM after compiling heaps of data, Miller, Geria and Italiano are clearly better than Karacic , Strain and Geraint Jones ( Arnie's favourite) for RB and Right WB.

Metcalfe could even be good for RWB.

Agree with most of your post too.

I don't ever recall seeing Metcalfe at RWB. Mostly as a RW and ocassionally as an AM.

Both Miller and Rowles are better at centre back than wing back i would think. Still hoping someone steps up Bennie, Aqualina... Maybe Overy will surprise. Would probably prefer Metcalfe take the RWB over RW/AM.

Eventually I'd like to see Metcalfe trialled at RWB. On a formation paper that's where he's listed but the role is more inverted and he'll be able to roam around. He did play some time at LWB for club and handled it well. He ended up central and further up with midfielders covering the space.

Rowles good defensively?

Yeah if you dont want to attack and just want to defend in our own half. But to go forward the guy only backpass , sideway and short pass. At least Miller can go forward and cross. Rowles cant cross btw if he goes forward he would turn around and pass it backwards.
He is naturally a CB .

Geria has been good recently?
Have you watched the last window FIFA DAY? Not just bad but terrible

I thought Geria was good in the last window, but had a few rusty moments. He's not as good atm as when he was playing regularly.

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since THAT famous night in 2005?! 😳

To commemorate the anniversary, a new documentary is coming. 🍿

📺 WATCH ‘The Kick that United a Nation’ this Friday night at 8:40pm on Channel 10.

November 16th right?

That's the date. I'll be wearing something for it. Got a t shirt with Schwarzer making that save. Some online store made them years ago.
wouldn't mind a rewatch party online. Most people here probably have roos fans they are friends with in real life mind you (I'm in the UK so all my roo fans friends are online)

Gee i miss having that calibre of players

Having said that we might qualify if in the same situation today. Being battle harderned in asia is worth a lot. The socceroos were at their peak in 2009ish before the golden generation fully declined with age but after they had a chance to play together more often against meaningful opposition

Wish we were in asia in the 90s and got to see what that group of players could achieve if given the chance

interesting the did have their own Asian hiccups but the 2010 qualifiers were generally strong. Helped by a late Bahrain away win and Uzbekistan was tight. The other group games were often draws or reverse results. Needed a chill goalless draw in Qatar to secure it then we had some dead rubbers that we also won.
