I'm not sure its that cut and dried about players of today - sure the game keeps evolving - stats and formations are at the forefront how to play your opponent - its harder to break good defences down etc....low blocks, park the bus's. 10 frigging players holding stations - well why not when your facing a far stringer opponent whereas before you got flogged.
You telling me todays class players don't bung it on enough, ala Mbappe/Salah/Saka/Haaland/Kane etc. Lamel !
Those alone do the unexpected in spades.
Mids such as DeBruyne/Pedri/Valverde/MacAllister etc < what class these type of players are against all this chess and checkers formations they still break the lines, by pass's/flicks or dribble through them OR long range worldys.
Backs omg machines today.
Also what level you look at it from I guess as well.
The current WC holders you could say they were the perfectly balanced squad.
Ange's prob in top flight is the cattle/lacking start up players on the bench and noted goal scorers and key midfielders.
Sure he's one trick ponty but so are many coachs imo.
Some are perenial bad luck types, some are just bad communicaters, tight arse employers, bad club culture, so many other reasons.
Success only comes to so so few.
