The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

I've just put together a little Championship page for the tables and fixtures/results:

I've slotted in South Hobart, but if they lose out to Launceston City I'll amend it.

Also added a link to the map of Australian clubs. It's a few years old but better than nothing haha.

Which is your "group of death"?

For mine, it's down to two groups. Group C has the best top 3 in the groups, but Group D has the better overall 4.

So it's D > C > B > A... the groups in reverse order haha!
Could we hypothetically import the KMZ I’ve created on offline Google Earth (but uploaded to the Drive)?

I think I might have to manually add them bit by bit, but is a wider base as well.

If you have a google maps or google earth link for that then I'm happy to add a link straight to it 🙂
I could probably add a link to Green & Gold FC too haha! Why not spread the word. Might link some podcasts too 👍🏼

Will have to work on the link - this link is the best I've got at the moment, as I've done it offline on the Google Earth desktop program. So.. watch this space I guess haha

2.8k for Bergers
2.3k for Avondale

Pretty poor imo considering potentially the biggest games in both clubs history.

Macarthur and Western Uniteds 4k crowds were seen as diabolical, whats a pass mark in the championship?

SM and Preston 5k (if that), everyone else will be lucky to get over 1k.
Pass mark is whatever the clubs meed to sustain a national comp

Kazakhstan 2nd division has crowd averages of 620, so honestly anything is ok

You keep pounding down those figures to make yourself feel better there buddy.. Official number was 3034 which doesnt include kids as they dont pay ticket! Closer to 4k overall crowd.. You know about 1.5k more than your 2 aleague clubs got in practically their local derby the round before and with travelling support, but hey lets omitt those unconvenient truths so you can make whatever point you want to.....now let loose the excuses, we ll be waiting!

Most of us will continue to laugh at the fact you can claim with a straight face that WU had 4k crowds, ever!!

LOL @ Macarthur getting 4k, perhaps if you counted everyone 3 times.

There are only so many football fans that would go and watch a local club regardless. If people think that moving forward all of these clubs are suddenly going to get an extra 5,000 fans come out of the woodwork then they're going to be sorely disappointed. As someone else said somewhere people need to stop slavishly getting anxious over crowd numbers. In Australia there are only so many football fans in total.

People are too worried about the numbers in grandstands. Just get the right sized stadium for each club. Portugal, which has one of the best leagues in Europe, generally has low attendances apart from 5 teams who manage to get over 10k averages. Everyone else gets small crowds unless they are playing one of the Big 3.

I follow all the Championship socials, but I think I might have to switch off for a while. Most of the comments are used just to denigrate A-League, and it's making it sadly difficult to enjoy following the Championship.

I use Championship forums to engage with the league, not to denigrate other, uninvolved leagues. Likewise with how I use A-League forums. It's like visiting the Salvos and saying that the stuff at Vinnie's is shit. Who does that? Deranged, the lot of them.

Some people just want to watch the world burn, as Alfred said. And I'm over it.

See it in another way mate.... rivalry breeds competition.... As much as the APL (and the Aleague fans) are protecting their "turf" and the Championship upstarts are "invading" it .... all that will lead to, hopefully one day, a healthy rivalry based on football and not just foreign investment.

I agree with you to some degree. I mean both matches reported closer to 3k or whatever but you are right, crowds should have been much bigger... As for the Championship, I very much doubt, even the smaller clubs, will be getting <1k crowds...Especially NOT for the first few rounds...

To answer your question about "pass mark" there is none as others have alluded too. As long as the host club is able to function based on the crowd that comes in, THAT is the pass mark.. This league isnt set up for you, or me o anyone to be entertained, it is being set up as the pinnacle of ambitious Australia football clubs and the national tier of a pyramid, with the aim of growing over time... Keep that plastic metrics, corporate, Star Wars round, cavernous empty stadium failures shit to the Aleague...

As always Mono, you make a thoughtful point. I think it's because I see the whole of 🇦🇺⚽ struggling, I'm in the "lifting up everyone" camp. On the other hand, if we were all floating on top of the world then I wouldn't mind being humbled and brought down a peg or two.

Do the war of words help when everyone is struggling? There may be a case for it in football... you've certainly got me thinking about it. It's not my nature but I know it is amongst the masses, and democracy wins haha.

Hey @HappyGuus in all sincerity mate I hope we one day get to the point where FOOTBALL is both the unifier and divider of all of our conversations.

I dream of logging on here one day and fielding dozens of barbs and insults against my beloved club.

Not because we are:

  • Founded by an amalgamation of park clubs founded by Greek migrants 70 years ago
  • Have an ethnically Greek background
  • Were/are competing in the State league, NSL, NPL, Club World Cup, Oceania Pro league or anywhere else.
But rather, because we are a rival successful (or unsuccessful depending on who you ask) Australian football club, competing on equal footing (regardless of league level) with all the other clubs in this wide brown land...

Football (at least for me) is ALL about the tribal belonging to "the club" first and foremost... Banter and attacks on that basis (just like everywhere else in the known footballing world) are what I long for... NOT this artificial division...

In that case, what crowds are required for the clubs to be able to function? All you need is deep pockets like Avondale and your set.

Melbourne City for example have crowds of 5k, its the end of the world, but the owners can afford those crowds so whats the problem/difference?

Mate, I got the figures directly from the clubs.

I didn't care if the WU had crowds of 10k, or 500, as long as the club was able to provide another opprtunity for 20 players to go pro.

It's sad people are happy we have lost a club, regardless if they should not have been granted a licence in the first place.

Amazing how the goal posts shift, A-league averages 8k, is a disaster, where in reality its top 30 world wide, and then clubs in the championship can get less than 1k, and suddenly crowds don't matter.

Exactly, the fact the Aleague can average 8k in its current state is a miracle.
