Sunshine Coast for A-League?

Queensland deserves another team on the national stage.
Maybe Moreton City in the Championship will be it.

Yes I did, been following the NSL since it started in 1977. Went to some Brisbane City, Brisbane Lions and Brisbane United (remember them?) games over the years. Also went to quite a few Strikers games, including the 1997 grand final. The reason I ask the question about Strikers is that they are nowhere near the same club as they were in the NSL days. They have struggled to get out of FQPL1 after being relegated from NPL a few seasons ago. They may get up this season though, depending on the result of their final game this week.

I would strongly suspect that Strikers have next to no interest in trying to get into the A League.

You have answered my question though about why some people see Strikers as the club they think should be the second Brisbane A League club, i.e., being familiar with the name.
 
Brisbane Roar are doing something right. I just got a call from them as someone who attended the game, to let me know that the club will be hosting 3 A-League games at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe this upcoming season, and that they’ll be selling 3-game Redcliffe memberships for $60, suitable for those who live North of Brisbane and don’t usually travel to Suncorp for matches 👏

The guy also said that due to the unexpected high crowd figure on the Sunshine Coast they’re looking to bring more games up there, and are planning to host an Australia Cup game there next time they’re drawn as the home team against an A-League side.

He did also say though that unfortunately the stadium in its current state doesn’t qualify for regular A-League matches with only 1,000 seats, so any A-League matches that Brisbane Roar brought up in future would have to be after the stadium upgrades are completed.

That sort of flies in teh face of allowing any chance of a Sunshine Coast franchise expansion the future doesn't it? Not having a go at Roar, but it does seem to be like they are protecting their turf.

Seems odd considering WUFC were allowed to play in a paddock.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Until there is a Sunshine Coast team, it kind of is their turf.

In the same way that Sydney FC played some pre-season matches in Western Sydney before WSW came along.

I wouldn’t expect anything different tbh.

They are not that kind of club anymore.

When the Strikers entered the then local Brisbane competition after the NSL finished they still retained a bit of the core of their support. The bloke who dressed like a Viking who would constantly shout "C'mon U Strikers..." and all his mates...

They were reasonably well supported in the Brisbane Premier League for a while.

But as the years moved on so did the last dregs of their supporters group and these days it's probably just mums and dads plus the odd WAG who go and watch at the dilapidated Perry Park.

Just out of interest do you think there's any club in SE Qld who would be seriously looking at stepping up into any kind of national competition?

Either the A League or a mooted season long second tier competition?

I can't see any of the existing clubs having any interest at all in entering the A League.

With the second tier, in the initial expressions of interest Strikers formed an alliance with Wynnum and Virginia to enter a team, but that pretty quickly died a natural death. I can't recall now, but didn't Brisbane City, Olympic and one of the Gold Coast teams (United or Knights) also express an interest initially? Whichever ones did, they all withdrew their interest fairly early on. Sunshine Coast Fire looked like the most interested club to get into the second tier, until FQ shot them down.

If any clubs are looking at entering a second tier comp in future, I suspect the most likely might be City, Olympic, or Gold Coast Knights. Maybe Strikers too. But I don't think any of them are really interested at this time.

I think Sunny Coast Fire in their current guise might be persona non grata for the foreseeable future. And I don't think JPL is going to have much of an impact on SEQ football.
