Have to admit I was impressed with Wrexham.
When I used to watch the Championship and League 1, when Fox covered it, and when Jedi played for Palace in the Champ, only Benitez's team, plus Notts Forest and Derby County, played football on the deck in the Champ. Luongo's Swindon in league 1, also played it. Most of the rest played hoofball. Pim thought it was rubbish!
I think a commentator said Wrexham came 3rd in League 1.
If other teams play like Wrexham in League 1 and Champ, there has been a metamorphosis in style. Based on my obs, particularly in the first half when both teams played seniors :
* Wrexham had nice rhythm changes in their game. They mixed up fast and slow tempos.
* Wrexham appeared to dominate Vic in 1v1 s - body on body contact, plus heading duels.
* Both Wrex wingers appeared to out-head the Vic FBs. They also had neat ball control.
* Wrex's ability to condense space in Ball Possession Opposition when Vic had the ball was very good. Without closing down space with intensive Squeezing, they still managed to force MV to play in less time and space on the ball than the inverse.
* Players supported the ball carrier much better than when I used to watch Champ and League 1, by proactively opening passing lanes before he received the ball. Wrex players on the ball had more passing options.
* Wrex went to 3 at the back when they had the ball, to create more bodies and passing options further up the pitch.
Not sure how many players are Welsh or English in Wrex team?
If Aussie players play Champ or League 1 football now, it appears to be a better option than it was 10 -15 years ago.
Others have told me off forum the Champ and L 1 have improved immeasurably. It looks like they could be right. England has depth in quality players if the Champ is playing deck football. Again when I used to watch it, the ball turned over so frequently, because most teams could not sustain possession for any length of time. It was a second ball, hoofball league.
