They 'needed' expansion clubs at that stage when WUN and Bulls came in. They just didn't realise they picked two duds.

As for Perth - they didn't want to lose a west coast club because how could they be considered a national comp.

I don't expect such cut prices licenses for a fairly central Melbourne franchise

On the licence fee, I've always seen it like a guarantee that gets returned via distributions over the years, no big deal. Like how the league was largely protected by Western United's failure because they paid upfront.

The difference is it used to be returned quicker, maybe over 5-10 years? Now, if it's $15m at $500k distributions, that's going to take 20-30 years! So that would be my arguement for reducing the fee.

Let's say South enter A-League at the same time as Canberra men's for 28-29. And the non-refundable part of the licence fee has gone up with inflation to $5m since pre-COVID. And the licence gets you guaranteed A-League until 33-34 like the other clubs, that's six seasons. At $500k/yr distribution, that's $3m on top of the $5m. So for South, I wouldn't be paying more than $8m for a licence. Unless the league can guarantee South that distributions will increase, but I'm not holding my breath in the short term.

I could be talking complete crap but that's how it works in my head 🤪

There are other factors too, like how Pellegra paid one dollar for Perth on the priviso of putting the money into facilities instead, and wiping the club debt.

The main thing I'm thinking off the ice rink he's been behind building in Canberra - which was announced 3 and a half years ago and still is getting the Western United treatment.

TBH - that seems to be the problem that the ACT government has with anything that isn't AFL related.

Also true - but I am very much a believer of where there's smoke, there's fire - so between that, the Perth Glory payments issue, and now the Catania non-payment of league registration for the season, it has me a bit worried.

In contrast, the A-Leagues lack the funding that even other sporting codes here get. The marketing is terrible, like they barely even convince people to come to games unless it's a derby or a finals match.

Wasnt all that supposedly fixed when it was created? Wasnt it always us trad clubs that held it back? They cant legit claim it as a reason any longer surely especially aince it wasnt accepted as a reason when we had the NSL quite the opposite infact it was hypocritically claimed and still is that we held it back! NO?

Well patj, they can stand hard not wanting to budge for all they do is shoot themselves in the foot right ?
How many offers would they have on the table to consider ?
Sweet fa the way I see it otherwise we'd be seeing expansion moving ahead, not just now but prior.
Canbra people keep going on about - a write off imo.
Gong - they should be offering a special deal for anyone that would involve the Wolves for a newbie franchise will enjoy the honeymoon then pitter away.
They need anyone who puts their hand up no ? and they should do their best to involve a current Club that is capable of meeting the standards required.
Your own backyard is your nest egg imo.
Hence viable NPL's are the go but no, its not in the mindset to avoid the "mud" that previous AL and to date they indoctrinated in the first place.
They have put themselves in the right royal corner at the detriment of our game and all of us.

Christchurch are already signalling and I'm just suspicious that as soon as Harry Stamoulis started kicking the tires and then quickly walked away that maybe a small word was had about Geelong

As for ex NPL clubs if Wollongong was in position to run an ALM club (which I don't think they are) they would be someone I think they would offer a cut price to if it meant a merge / takeover of Macarthur. But that like Geelong is another city with a distinct identity - not another western Sydney club.

In other words cut price deals for 3rd clubs in existing major capital cities I don't think will be given away. Maybe second clubs. I think that the APL be happy to wait for P & R in 8 - 10 years or stick with 12 and possible 14 before going down the NPL or P & R route for a while yet.

Is that the right way to go - I don't think so. Is that the way it will happen - I do think so.

An annual low cost 'associate license' to compete as I think someone suggested (assuming you qualify via winning your NPL and have minimum broadcast lighting etc) would probably be a good mix and open it up to many more places.
