Yes but they still compete in the Prem today and thus benefit from the commercialism of the Prem. They would benefit less if they were still in the Championship and even less if they went down to League One and below.

In contrast, the A-Leagues lack the funding that even other sporting codes here get. The marketing is terrible, like they barely even convince people to come to games unless it's a derby or a finals match.

He supports his club, not the league they are in.

And to be fair, Leeds have spent more time in the lower leagues in the last decade or two then in the prem.

Pro tip, when buying a ticket to a Marcathur game always buy the cheapest GA available and then move into the middle of the grandstand and sit on the halfway line, they never check.

Did something like this at a Melbourne Heart game years back. Bought the cheapest GA ticket, and just sat in the travelling Cove

You're not wrong and neither is he. He's just found a niche for his videos like any other content creator so is gonna role with it. But theres a fat nugget of truth in what he said.

The AL feels tired. The format is tired. The stadiums are too big. The support is stagnant.

To me we need to mend bridges not keep the draw bridge up. Connect the pyramids. Let the cards fall where they may. It'd be refreshing.
 
Isn't the franchise fee the biggest issue to connecting the pyramids? Surely the entity who paid $15M to join a league did so on the condition that they could not be relegated out of it.

He supports whichever club buys him free beer.. Don't blame the guy he's trying to sell his fabric softener or whatever gym powder is.

That relegation condition seems to be a myth. To me, it smells more like a gentleman's agreement more than anything.

On the licence fee, I've always seen it like a guarantee that gets returned via distributions over the years, no big deal. Like how the league was largely protected by Western United's failure because they paid upfront.

The difference is it used to be returned quicker, maybe over 5-10 years? Now, if it's $15m at $500k distributions, that's going to take 20-30 years! So that would be my arguement for reducing the fee.

Let's say South enter A-League at the same time as Canberra men's for 28-29. And the non-refundable part of the licence fee has gone up with inflation to $5m since pre-COVID. And the licence gets you guaranteed A-League until 33-34 like the other clubs, that's six seasons. At $500k/yr distribution, that's $3m on top of the $5m. So for South, I wouldn't be paying more than $8m for a licence. Unless the league can guarantee South that distributions will increase, but I'm not holding my breath in the short term.

I could be talking complete crap but that's how it works in my head 🤪

There are other factors too, like how Pellegra paid one dollar for Perth on the priviso of putting the money into facilities instead, and wiping the club debt.
 
The license fee was a moving target even in Lowys reign.
Like being first to market he got the first suckers big time - as time went by and expansion got harder no many takers they started dropping the original fee.
