Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

i think it really depends on souths mentallity, AU have shown they are suceptible to being 'bullied' by aggresive or more physical opponents.

im not saying come out all gung ho, but they need to attack AU as much as possible. The last thing you would want is parking the bus and having players of the quality of goodwin or muniz pinging the ball around the box - you'd be asking for trouble.
There is a bit of a mini surge of momentum at the moment. The new blood has settled well and the second keeper has almost kept a clean sheet against one of the trickiest attacks in Melbourne. You cant say we are a physical team but I have a feeling we will come out of the sheds with something to prove.

I am expecting a strong AUFC starting XI on Thursday night. My assumption will be as yours @TheSecretScout, where AUFC looks to kill off the match early and then play the kids to see out the result.

The longer it remains level will keep us in the match increase our chances to pinch a result.
I agree, if its is close by the end of the 90 mins we get it on pure adrenaline alone I reckon.

it has the all makings of being a good match, even a 'cupset'. But thats only if AU takes there eyes off the prize, yes the ACL match is of far more importance. But like i said the other day, AU is one of the only a league clubs to always take the aus cup seriously, as realistically its a good chance of lifting a trophy.

i mean AU have won it 3 times, the most out of any club side since the cups inception 12 years ago and were unlucky to not win it a 4th time after losing in the final. They havent gone as far as they would've like in the last several years though.

These sort of matches either entertain the neutrals or they get stuck in cagey spiteful play... Either way, provided the weather holds up, should be a good match.

If it makes you feel any better, AU have not been in imperious form during any friendlies so far this season, yes they've won all there pre season games so far - but they havent dominated for 90 mins.

Nothing unusual with that, because it is still preseason and the focus has been on getting the tactics right for the asian match

Any rough idea if many are travelling down for this match? And I'm pretty sure the club can cater sushi for your players if need be haha

We are in a bit of a pickle at the moment, a bit of a crossroads as a club and an identity. There's a lot of shouting, a lot of bravado, a lot of promises made and a lot of distractions. A win on Thursday will reward the playing group AND the loyal fans but also paper over some of the ugliness I feel. Let the cards fall as the may, its NEVER dull being a Hellas fan.

Im flying in tomorrow arvo, I imagine most of the core group of travelling supporters like cervaro ( red wig steve) will come in thursday morning or arvo and then you'll have your usual ex pats that now reside in melbourne that come out whenever AU play melbourne based teams.

Overall I dont think it will be a large contingent, under 50 would be my guess

as long as no one gets in my way for a souv, we should be good lol

Considering the previous match between the two clubs was their last meeting in the NSL, I'd love to see some sort of pre-match ceremony. Maybe bring out as many former players from that season for a photo op together? Or a ceremonial exchange of red cards? 😅 Too soon?

Will Riak get a run?
i like AJ, purely from my interactions with him - ive found AJ to be a humble, polite & respectful man.

i know hes a little frustrated that his body hasnt held up to the rigours of professional football in australia (consistent soft tissue injuries, hamstrings in particular ) but hes working hard in training every day.

this match will come a little too soon for him though

I really thought we were hard done by in that match, we should have won.

That said Adelaide copped 5 the following week in Perth. We would have been more competitive but still probably lost.

Yeah I'd like to know who controls the historical matches and how the public can access all of it.
If its on Youtube I would have thought its public domain? - Still adamant we where robbed but make your onw mind up.. watch f rom 48:00 to see the studs up tackle on Bootsi to really get what we were up against.

I meant like the original footage, not someone's VHS recordings haha.
Kids these days don't know what auto tacking was. Or rabbit ears.
