Australian transfers 26-27 Summer

Once the great white hope
Good player tbf when i watched him live at the 2019 Asian cup. Very technical. Ripped it up in primevera and then for a couple of seasons in the A league before suffering bad injuries.. after that never really got going again. Blame his agent, really should have gotten a good move there between 2017 to 2020.

Ikon's tournament was the 2019 Asian Cup. Needed a bit more senior football and better coaching at certain stages. Had he been given more Australia caps, we'd have seen him play well.

You make a lot of good points and fair to see it as a huge move when looking at it like that. If we're talking as a development platform, there's very few destinations greater than Sporting. They are recognised as a development factory, globally.

However, they don't play in any of the Big 5, and have never won a European Cup, which for me is a criteria for a huge move (albeit Sporting is a stronger move than Nottingham Forest, Hamburg or Marseille).

They're not bigger than Dortmund or Villa.

They're certainly not bigger than the powerhouses of European football (Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, ManU, AC, Inter....the list goes on).

Was my point.
I get it, your judging the move off your perception of the clubs prestige and past heritage, (like everyone is).

And yes, Sporting are not even the biggest club in Portugal (its a clear 3rd actually) in terms of both fans and league titles.

But, in very recent history it is THE dominant club in Portugal. They just made the Champions league Qtr Final, ie the top 8 clubs in Europe, and won 3 leagues in last 5 seasons. Re 'not being in the top 5', portuguese league is 6th, and like i keep saying theres a very big diffrence in level, playing at say PSV or Sporting, than there is vs a Troyes or Koln. Fyr, Troyes' squad is valued outside the top 200 clubs and Koln is about number 100 (compared to Sporting's 25th).

Gauci loaned to Championship side Lincoln
Ooh interesting, hopefully he plays!!!!

Do we reckon he could make his way back into the Socceroos squad? I’d presume it’d be Paul Izzo that gets dropped if he does. Goalkeeping is such a hard position, only three spots to compete for but a fair few to choose from.

We're so thin on keepers so it won't take much for ins and outs with injury and a bit of rotation of the third keeper. We've had Glover, AMB, Thomas and maybe a few others in and out over the last 8 years.

That's really good to see Gauci at Lincoln with Elder. George Wickens is the incumbent keeper so I expect he'll get a run first. The other keeper is 26 and has been on many loans. Lincoln have a league winning side from last season but definitely need to bolster a bit and they've already done it with Elder. A few more robust signings and I think they can avoid the drop.
