The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

The Matildas and the Socceroos are the cash cows. I thought Popovic would have an acceptable Asian Cup and then look for a high paying job in Asia. This smacks of a trap.
I think this is the ideal situation for all parties. . Popovic is a decent coach. He has given the side a solid basis and whilst getting us qualified and producing an OK performance at the world cup has also done a reasonable job of introducing new players and rebuilding the squad. I'm not convinced he is the coach we need for the next cycle though. Of course we still need to appoint a decent coach to take advantage of what he has started.

3 games though- with no improvement- I still think he is being set up. Change or go. And you can't change against these two.
I don't mind the narrative where the FA start to 'force' the issue with a sort of 'let's see how Tony wants to play now?' post World Cup with all the discourse with our identity and playing style etc. And you may be right that this may be another string to their bow in the way of building a case for his replacement.

I thought the FA comments immediately after our exit were fairly unprecedented in our history in two ways, the immediacy of the statements, and the clear public backing whilst laying down the challenge to Tony to evolve us from this point.

These amongst others were key to me from Garriock:

“When you hear commentators and pundits talking about Australians – whether it’s men or women, at senior or youth international – it’s about: we’ve always had a physical nature, we’ve had that mentality that is never-say-die, and it’s a character of being able to to play until the end.

“We don’t want to be just that. We want to make sure we can play football. We’ve got a defensive mindset within the Socceroos, which has been fantastic, and that’s certainly worked for us. But creativity is really important, being adaptable, flexible and versatile is really important to the Australian way of playing.”

Can Popovic and that new, creative philosophy coexist? Garriock said she was “very confident” they can.

My read on it all currently is that the ONLY way that Popovic even remotely keeps his job without changing his football post Asian Cup is if he brings the trophy home. And even then he won't last long term.

As our football grows and develops so do we all. Our level of expectation now as a nation is higher because so many see clips of what some of these players can do at their clubs and we expect that in the green and gold. Our football is growing and the FA are looking at the bank balances and they understand having an exciting positive attack first minded style makes for the most attention and best content. They know this is the economy they are in and that is the money maker.

Having a manager that doesn't bristle at every question that relates to his decisions and actions. This is OUR team Tony we deserve the respect to know. Or is a 'gut feel' good enough when our manager makes a footballing decision that impacts us all.

Wasn't meant as a joke. I think it is very realistic. the Socceroos and the Matildas are the brands that push Australia's football. Does playing defensively for the next 4 years attract fans and keep sponsors?

Tony did what was needed. Is he what is needed now is the question that the FA may be asking privately while supporting him publicly.

Playing two very strong South America teams in in the September-October break can totally expose his style of football. Right before the Asian Cup it is not needed. It just smells like a trap to me.

Of course these tickets will sell because of the opposition. But two years on playing Jordan or Vietnam with a defensive mind set I doubt will be similar cash bonanzas.

The FFA did it before to Holger. Chinese Super League ends first week of November and there could be a couple of coaches that interest the FFA free by then. 3 month prep for the AC and then a contract for the next WC cycle.

I think the simpler answer is that the FA needs the revenue and these two fixtures will be good money spinners.

yeah if you make money spinners regularly there is a lot of money to be made in the national teams

especially if the government pays as these teams often have a big asking price

You guys get in your own feedback bubble about Popa. He is hated, so any little thing is grabbed onto as hope it will finally see him sacked. That squad selection, that team selection, that performance in a friendly and on and on. Meanwhile at FA if you brought any of this up they would just look at you wondering wtf you were talking about.

The FA stated is was a successful WC after extending him prior to the tournament based on qualifying and friendlies. I would be fairly confident they mean it. The games are because QLD stumped up the cash to play Brazil so it is all extremely profitable. He will take us to the AC and probably lose when he runs into Japan. That will be considered above a pass and they will then make a choice about the next cycle.
