I agree with sentiment already that Brazil isn't the right opponent before the Asian Cup and perhaps Uruguay isn't either.

The bigger Asian nations are tough but I'd prefer someone a bit lighter so Popovic can practice tactics on the ball as that's how we'll be for most of the tournament.

They talk about an October window in the article but there isn't really one. It's a combined September/October window where we can play up to 4 matches. A game against Uruguay will at the latest be Tuesday Oct 6. Maybe as early as Friday Oct 2. I think we are prioritising gate receipts rather than Asian Cup preparation.

Some of the South American sides employ similar styles of play and tactical systems to certain teams at the Asian Cup though so playing teams like Brazil and Uruguay would still be useful for the Socceroos heading into their campaign.
 
Any game is useful can’t see the issue.
Playing higher quality sides the better the way I see it.
 
Brazil game in Brisbane sold out to general public in 2 days. Definitely some filling of the coffers by FA. Can understand it considering their current financials.

Ultimately as long as Popa doesn't park the bus and looks to evolve our play it shouldn't matter who the opposition is.

We've only got two windows. Playing higher quality is OK but it would be nice if we played a couple of games where the opposition will let us play the 3-4-3 more often than the 5-4-1. I suspect we may have trouble getting and keeping the ball against Brazil, even if they bring a side of youngsters which I would expect them to do.

I think Grazor on a recent pod highlighted how lucrative events can be for the National Team. Given our financials these games are sensible and necessary. The more of them the better.

Especially if the government pays

I think the potential revenue from national teams could as much tripple

We have imo a bigger spending than revrnue problem (we dont appear to be spending 140million revenue wisely) but there is a lot of slack on the revenue side to my surprise

I have it somewhere on my laptop. There are 2 versions. V1 in 2009 was nothing more than an ideological manifesto. V2 gave sample lessons for every age group. I have a thread in archive for historical documents ill put it there

Makes sense no doubt but it’s a double edged sword.
One one hand playing a lesser opponent shuffling our play were likely looking good and people get all too excited or confident about us which wcan work against you in real tournaments match play.
The other is going up against a likely better team that keeps in his style of known play and fine tunes after the lessons of the WC.
This imo is a better build up than being given a false sense of confidence.
Especially many here who will jump on the wagon saying how great we are going we’re gonna win the AC.

Wasn't meant as a joke. I think it is very realistic. the Socceroos and the Matildas are the brands that push Australia's football. Does playing defensively for the next 4 years attract fans and keep sponsors?

Tony did what was needed. Is he what is needed now is the question that the FA may be asking privately while supporting him publicly.

Playing two very strong South America teams in in the September-October break can totally expose his style of football. Right before the Asian Cup it is not needed. It just smells like a trap to me.

Of course these tickets will sell because of the opposition. But two years on playing Jordan or Vietnam with a defensive mind set I doubt will be similar cash bonanzas.

The Matildas and the Socceroos are the cash cows. I thought Popovic would have an acceptable Asian Cup and then look for a high paying job in Asia. This smacks of a trap.
