Australia vs Paraguay should clear 4m. I can't believe 6m watched State of Origin. I didn't even know it was on until somebody told me the day before.

I don't understand how state of orgin is more important then the Nrl Grand final?

I don't understand how state of orgin is more important then the Nrl Grand final?

Before the NRL there was the NSWRL and the QRL. The NRL was by far the stronger League. The QRL much more provincial. Each year they played games against each other.

After consistently getting thumped I think a QLD senator? suggested a State of Origin to be added to the series so that all the Queenslanders could play for their own State rather than against them.

It became a lot more tribal among the NRL followers - everyone has a state in a State of Origin - only two teams play in a Grand Final. The thing i don't get is how it is thought of above a Kangaroo match.

Today on the radio (2GB) they said there expecting viewing numbers of around 8 million for the final and deciding match of State of Origin making the World Cup view-ship figures redundant. Prob be bigger then the world cup final tbh.

The final is on at 5am, and it won't involve Australia. Its viewership will be significantly less than the Aust v US figures and would, expectedly, be less than SOO.

Whether it is Socceroos World Cup games, State of Origin or AFL Grand Final, the difference in viewership largely pertains to how accessible the TV product is to the vast population who has little interest in the sport, but will watch it simply because it is seen as the thing to do. It is a huge market. It is the same reason as why SOO rates about 5x higher than a normal NRL game. The Socceroos results, in quite poor time slots, have been exceptional.

In terms of competition between codes, Rugby League has the advantage of having 4 major events across the year (3x Origin + GF), whereas AFL only has one major event (GF). Aside from the major events, AFL generally has a higher audience. Football has very limited exposure as its major events are international events and game schedules are not set up to suit Australian TV. Could you imagine the TV ratings if the Socceroos v USA was on at 7pm on a Wednesday evening and not 5am on a Sunday morning. The Women's World Cup showed the power of football when it gets a major event in a prime time spot.

By the way, from the data I can see the SOO figures look pretty consistent with last year. Game I reach and average was around 5.7m / 3.9m this year, which is similar to the 5.4m / 3.7m last year. Game II was 6.1m / 4.2m this year, last year was 6.1m / 4.2m (so pretty much the same). Game III last year was 5.7m / 3.9m. I may eat my words, but surely there is no way they would hit 8m. That is a growth of around 33% on game II, or 40% on Game III last year. I would struggle to see where in the market that growth would come from.

And for some comparison, Matilda's v England semi final was 11.1m / 7.1m.

Well worth analysis.

If your don't know how this is what to do

Go to the TV tonight site.

Then go to the ratings link.

Then scroll down, the first chart is the overall ratings, the second chart is 25 I think to 50, the third chart is 16 to 39.

As you go down the number of places the world cup has increases the last chart is almost totally the world cup.

It's the only day I did but if reflective of other days it shows where our current market is

Absurd ratings again yesterday, three matches were 1.7m, 1.6m and 1.2m. For comparison, NRL was 1.2m and AFL was 0.9m.

The TV rights for the World Cup were so far undervalued, and the TV rights for the other competitions are so far overvalued, it is a joke. Crazy how SBS got it for only $30m, and are getting multiple games a day (and non-peak times), day after day, in excess of 1m viewers on free-to-air (and, I assume, vastly more on the app).

For anyone interested, reach figures last few days:

Monday: One game at 6am, Sth Africa v Canada (5am AEST) 0.68m

Tuesday: Germany v Paraguay 2.03m, Netherlands v Morocco 1.98m and Brazil v Japan (3am AEST) 0.70m.

Wednesday: France v Sweden 1.60m, and Mexico v Ecuador 1.34m.

From what I can gather, the average reach for a NRL or AFL games on FTA is around 1.2m to 1.4m.

Remember the email.

Never forget and even more so today with the new NRL media deal 750 million per year maybe growing to 800 million, and the AFL 650 million per year....they need to bury other sports...

Football especially worries them, as does Basketball...

Never forget the email...that thinking still applies ...best example after 7 took some of the women's World cup matches and got the best ratings ever by light years, both 7 & 9, said they could not bid for Football national teams as they could not make a profit thereby leaving 10 with no competition and thus able to launch a low ball bid.

Arguably 10 entered the game by bidding for the NRL, this forcing up the price to place huge pressure on 9 to fund other programming.

My hope but that's all it is ....that Ch 10 & P+ finally do decent marketing of Football ...there record to date is poor in promotion of Football

And they say the goverment doesn’t support Football? Well the goverment owns SBS so it’s goverment funding the World Cup broadcast.
