2027 Asian Cup

If his original KPI was to qualify then it was too low but was the time to extend. It should have been qualifying for the knockouts at a minimum in which case the decision is too soon.

Socceroos manager is not just about qualifying - it is showing what you can do on the big stage and inspire the nation - not just football tragics.e.g. Ange had an awful world cup on results - but it did inspire the nation. If Popa does the same with results while playing shit football he is not only killing the national team he is killing the acceptance of football as a whole in greater Australian sporting landscape, something I would suggest we cannot afford.
Maybe it was to give the players some comfort knowing he will coach the team at the Asian Cup? It will be interesting if we see a change in style of play after the World Cup given the Asian Cup is going to be a different challenge and we saw the struggles Arnie had at the Asian Cup when we are forced to have the ball against teams where we expected to beat.

The impact from Arnie making it out of the group was far greater than Ange. Arnie played the same style as we are now and got lucky. The results are more important to the normies.
No doubt if someone played like Ange and progressed this would be the dream.

Italiano - Circati - Souttar - Herrington - Bos

-----------------Robertson - Okon Jr------------------

-------------Volpato - Toure - Irankunda-------------

This is the type of progressive side I want to see in 2027. Popa isn't the coach to best utilise these players but this is a great start and has massive potential if we get it right and they continue to improve. Hopefully by then someone like Volpato is getting way more minutes for his club and can play 90 minutes for us.

Guess the question now is if Poppa finds some attacking intent or not?

I really don't want to watch us making Oman look like we are playing Spain.
Tony Popovic will insist on playing his ultra-defensive style of football and emphasise the importance of parking the bus which is only going to prove disastrous for us during our 2027 Asian Cup campaign when we make Singapore look like prime Argentina and end up losing to Graham Arnold and an Iraq side that won the spoon at the World Cup.

Nothing will save us unless Popa wakes up to himself and learns a system with at least a modicum of attacking movement. He may get some more results in Asia, but the team won't learn anything regarding positive play, and it will bore us all to tears.

While you squad (depending on injuries and form) isn't too far from the mark you know that Popa's favourite attacking formation is a back 3, 2 reasonably defensive mids, overlapping wingbacks, inverted wingers and a single central striker. You also know that when we lose the ball he prefers a quick transition back to the 5-4-1 rather than press to regain possession. The second preference is why we don't get a lot of possession against teams that are good at holding the ball.

I assume that would be Mo Touré? If we’re distinguishing between Kusini and Tete Yengi I think we should do the same with the Al-Hassan, Mo and Musa Touré.

As if any other Toure is being considered right now. There's a gulf in class between them.

As good as Irankunda and Volpato are, a fit McGree is still our best attacker and can play a full 90 minutes unlike the former 2. Id start McGree over Irankunda, bringing the latter on later. Shame Segecic defected as he would have been Volpatos backup.
