2027 Asian Cup

Isn't there an Aussie (whose name escapes me) in the junior ranks of Chelsea getting some plaudits? Not to mention Arena in Serie A. Hope they make themselves available to Australia.
There's like 5-6 Aussies tied to other nations from like ages 13-17 with lots of potential. Gianluca Okon, Arena, Mahdi-Jazuli, Ferdinand, Millwood are probably the ones we should focus on. None are good enough for the Roo's yet, but in four years definitely possible.

A bit older but could add Noa Skoko (20) at Hajduk Split.

Stupid decision before a ball is kicked. Could have just held on for two weeks
Very sensible decision. As long as the Asian Cup stays 6 months after the World Cup it's pointless and disruptive to change coaches (unless a coach fails to qualify for the World Cup). If they switch to a 2 year cycle we can start appointing coaches for 2 year contracts.

I would add that I think the timing of the announcement could have been better. Either a few weeks ago or after the tournament is over for us.

To be fair the Asian Cup is only 6 months away maybe its too short of a turnaround to appoint a new coach within the small windows available, it would be interesting to what KPI's they have for the Asian Cup...

There is also the idea that deciding these things now settles any speculation and the matter is closed. Dortmund smartly ruled Götze out of the UCL final on the Monday so the whole week didn't revolve around it.

The results at the world cup, good or bad, don't really mean much. They know what Popa brings at this point. Whether we get lucky and progress or get unlucky and don't, what he produces is clear.
FA decided they wanted to take that to the Asian cup.
As we have discussed here before, it is the logical stopping point to a tenure.
After the Asian cup you look at if this is what we want to take the team forward. Will he adjust the style for the new cycle. Is there a better option available etc.

That is confirming my point. If we get grouped and concede a dozen goals while playing haram ball then this looks incredibly stupid.

The timing for the extension was straight after qualifying

If his original KPI was to qualify then it was too low but was the time to extend. It should have been qualifying for the knockouts at a minimum in which case the decision is too soon.

Socceroos manager is not just about qualifying - it is showing what you can do on the big stage and inspire the nation - not just football tragics.e.g. Ange had an awful world cup on results - but it did inspire the nation. If Popa does the same with results while playing shit football he is not only killing the national team he is killing the acceptance of football as a whole in greater Australian sporting landscape, something I would suggest we cannot afford.
