World Cup 2026 Australia thread

If I’m not being biased, I’d say:

Round of 32:
  • Germany to beat Paraguay
  • France to beat Sweden
  • Canada to beat South Africa
  • The Netherlands to beat Morocco
  • Portugal to beat Croatia
  • Spain to beat Austria
  • The USA to beat Bosnia
  • Senegal to beat Belgium
  • Brazil to beat Japan
  • Norway to beat Ivory Coast
  • Mexico to beat Ecuador
  • England to beat the DRC
  • Argentina to beat Cape Verde
  • The Socceroos to beat Egypt
  • Switzerland to beat Algeria
  • Colombia to beat Ghana
Round of 16:
  • France to beat Germany
  • The Netherlands to beat Canada
  • Spain to beat Portugal on pens
  • Senegal to beat the USA
  • Brazil to beat Norway
  • England to beat Mexico
  • Argentina to beat us (sadly)
  • Colombia to beat Switzerland after extra time
Quarter-finals:
  • France to beat the Netherlands
  • Spain to beat Senegal
  • Brazil to beat England
  • Argentina to beat Colombia after extra time
Semi-finals:
  • France to beat Spain on pens
  • Argentina to beat Brazil
Third place:
  • Spain to beat Brazil
Final:
  • France to beat Argentina
Maybe bias for the final but I can see this happening. Colombia are my dark horse.

Shame about Uzbekistan. They had a tough group and some bad luck along the way. Hoped to see them achieve a bit more.
Iraq, Jordan, Uzbeks with 0 points, 9 losses, 6 goals for and 25 against.

Saudis with 2 points and Iran with 3.

Must be punishment for all those years diving instead of playing the game ( not counting Uzbeks, they don’t dive)

Looks like we’re gonna play Brazil in Townsville and Brisbane in September!!!
why carry this on in this WC 26 thread when you started one on the topic.
Just saying.

So, the asian dream finished in a puff of smoke in the end but 2 left standing.
Glad we are one of the 2 :)

While the system of having 8 x 3rd placed finishers progress isn’t exactly an ideal scenario for a fair and equitable draw, bloody hell it’s has added to the excitement. Some of the drama over the weekend was beyond ridiculous. Gotta feel sorry for Iran.

It’s also interesting to note that thousands upon thousands of simulations were done pre-tournament, which suggested 3 points and -2 GD would have got you one of the 8 x 3rd places. How wrong was that?

There has been a lot of talk about how well the African teams have gone and how poorly the Asian team have gone. 9 of 10 African teams have qualified for the last 32 and 2 of 8 Asian teams have qualified for the last 32.

But let’s see how many African teams qualify for the last 16, shall we? I think at most 1 of the 9 African teams will win their round of 32 game. While I believe both Asian teams will progress… And yes, that means I am predicting Japan to beat Brazil.

As for Australia v Egypt, there is an injury cloud on Mo Salah. But even if he was fit, I would be expecting to win. Iran should have beaten them the other day and I would suggest we are a better team than Iran (or at least at the same level as them).

I’m very surprised that Egypt are bookies favourites. But we have a long history of being underestimated. I’m taking that $3.50.

I love that confidence and would like some too. What's your thinking there? I'm kind of nervous about this game.

yes FTB - the games over the weekend had adrenaline run right through to the bitter end.
Great to see.
Least the africans are in numbers which isn't to be sneezed at.
You maybe right maybe 1 will be the last standing.
You got more faith than me, I see Brazil getting over the line, they have match winners ala Vini even IF the team is being held back by Jap, then the joker card of Neymar.
As for us, I'm on the fence with baited breath of our starting line up and tactics before I feel to say we got this.
Egypt went pound for pound with Belguim, despite what happens with MO Marmoush is a serious handful to deal with IF they get enough ball to him in our red zones.

When Egypt beat New Zealand, it was their first ever world cup win. They have never been to the knockout stage under this type of format, so this is all new to them. And irrespective of whatever happens on Saturday, they will consider this tournament to be a success.

But I believe we are at a more advanced stage as a footballing nation, and we will see this as a world cup as a failure if we don’t progress to the last 16. The people that manage our squad have been in this situation, so we do have some experience on our end.

Of course, none of that guarantees us a victory, and I can’t say I know a lot about the Egyptian squad apart from the obvious players. But I have watched their games. Sure, they did OK against a Belgium who failed to fire on all cylinders. The NZ goal against them suggests we could be a huge threat from set pieces. And apart from a few decent patches, I thought Iran completely dominated them.

Apparently, the net value of their squad is higher than ours, but not for long. I am confident we will have some players in demand during the transfer window.

Nice assessment. I guess I have taken a lot of impressions of Egypt's strength from their successes in Africa and of course Marmoush and Salah. Agree on the Iran game. I thought Iran was the better side too.
