Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

We've only ever had two knock out matches at WC and against Italy and Argentina, who both went on to win! Great opportunity for us albeit R32 rather than R16. Definitely dodged a bullet by avoiding Doku, De Bruyne, Trossard, Lukaku, Tielemans, Courtois and co.!

Things to be grateful for. Of the 12 teams that finish 2nd in their group, 8 play other 2nd placed sides but 4 of them have to play 1st placed sides. We're in the former category whereas other sides that finished 2nd like Japan and Morocco have drawn Brazil and Netherlands respectively. So we can definitely be thankful that went in our favour.

You can pick one GG player for this game. Who is it? Given the injuries I'd say Emerton. Would love an Aloisi type up front. Toure will be starting this one.
Any clinical finisher would give us the win.

We create enough clear opportunities to be successful - we consistently fail to put them away.

Have we ever had a pathway to goal, beyond Cahill's head, where we felt every strike was a fairly certain bet and missing was an unexpected result?

I won't feel comfortable until NoMates has properly written us off.
4-1 Egypt! All good things must cum to a end, We never really stood a chance anyway and flukeing your way through games can only get u so far.
Oh well it was good why'll it lasted. The FA get a bonus payment since we made it out of the group and this match is a good warm-up heading into the Asian Cup.
At least we will have State Of Origin to look forward to.

The Egypt side may well be severely hampered

Egyptian players

Definitely out

Mohannad Lasheen (Central Midfielder):

Confirmed OUT. The defensive midfield anchor received his second yellow card of the group stage against Iran, triggering an automatic one-match FIFA suspension.

Under an injury cloud

Mohamed Salah (Forward / Captain)

Status: Compromised but likely to push through.

The Issue: Salah was substituted in the 57th minute against Iran with heavy medical strapping applied to his left leg. While coach Hossam Hassan publicly voiced optimism that the injury is minor, the medical staff is working round-the-clock to manage what is feared to be a left knee issue or hamstring strain

Mohamed Abdelmonem (Centre-Back)

Status: Highly Doubtful.

The Issue: Egypt's premier defensive anchor limped off the pitch a mere 13 minutes into the final group match. He suffered a severe knee injury and heavy ankle bruising that makes a quick recovery for Friday highly improbable.

Ahmed Fatouh (Left-Back)

Status: Highly Doubtful.

The Issue: Fatouh suffered an acute hamstring strain late in the match against Iran. Because Egypt had already exhausted all five of their tactical substitution windows, he was forced to painfully jog out the remaining minutes of the match, heavily compounding the muscle damage.

Hamdy Fathy (Central Midfielder)

Status: Doubtful.

The Issue: Fathy missed the high-stakes match against Iran entirely due to a persistent hamstring injury. He remains isolated from main team training sessions under close observation by the medical department.

Hossam Abdelmaguid (Centre-Back)

Status: Likely Out / Under Watch.

The Issue: The young defender was sidelined from the previous matchday due to a head injury. He is currently bound by strict FIFA concussion safety protocols, meaning he cannot be cleared for contact training until he successfully passes consecutive daily neurological evaluations.

I'd consider a 3-5-2 for this match with Volpato operating as a 10 and Bos and Geria wingbacks. It makes us a bit narrow and O'Neill and Metcalfe would have to be alive to threats from quick transitions by Egypt down our wings from a wingback turnover high up the pitch. Volpato would have to work back to cover a vacated central area.
But I doubt Popa will change formation so I'd go with Irankunda at rwb, Bos at lwb and Toure up top. See if we could get an hour out of Irankunda in a demanding position before replacing him with Geria.

Aus is quite hampered with Italiano, McGree and possibly Toure out too.

Good round up of Egypt too, PJ.

Riley McGree was ruled out of the entire World Cup before the Socceroos' campaign got underway and now both Jacob Italiano and Mathew Leckie have been ruled out through injury so we have to go without them heading into the round of 32.
