But when it comes to country or club, it’s country. Players leave clubs, but it’s much harder to leave countries. Clubs are businesses.
Agree that country is more important than club since you have more of a connection to a national team compared to a club but to be fair fans can be attached to certain players which may influence their decision regarding who to barrack for though.

For you sure, but NOT for everyone...

And its NOT that hard to leave countries anymore...
You have to be eligible and fill out some lengthy paperwork. Sometimes it’s worth it if you’ve got no chance of getting picked for your home country but it’s certainly not easy. It’s easy to be eligible since immigration is so common, but it’s not easy to fill out that paperwork.

Not talking about just players but good point. Who do you think Souttar grew up supporting?

If a club has some cultural or national identity then it's essentially a country anyway. It represents an area or culture defined within its borders.

No wonder clubs with an ethnic connection gets such strong support.

Don't ALL clubs represent a culture? Whether that is ethnic, religious, political or geographical what difference does it make? You CHOOSE your club, you cant choose your country...

Clubs that have an ethnic or cultural tie get a lot of the same passion as supporting a nation does. Some clubs have a weaker standing.

Rangers and Celtic are both supported with as much passion as are Hellas Verona and Lazio??? Not sure I follow.
I guess tribalism is the word. If a club has a strong sense of identity it evokes a lot of the same emotion as supporting a nation, not only in footballing terms, and some even shut out others or have a certain ilk of supporter.

Yeah I can agree to that. Countries witha very strong sense of club culture teh nd to show it. Look at the England fans for example, sure they get aroudnt ehir nation come WC time but have you noticed their flags?

Or the Brazilians or the Argies... supporting the country is a temporary cease fire at best.

Most of them, yeah. Mind you we have more dual internationals than the four or five that’ve gotten public attention over the past few years.
Sure but you know that players and their parents wouldn't move half way across the world if little Johnnie didn't dream of playing for the Azzuri or the 3 Lions right?

Why wouldn’t they? Football programs are stronger in England and Italy, why would they need to come to Australia?
If they where born her and followed the Socceroos like you are so sure of, they wouldn't need to come here from anywhere, they would already be here. Question is why leave AUSTRALIA so young if the dream is the Socceroos?
