You are the majority in Australia ... Thats why we are where we are in the football world.
In england the interest for the world cup and the national team dwarfs the epl, its not even close. Also true for the euro. The constant news coverage, every pub and even church showing the matches, every commercial, talk around the office etc

This is anecdotal, but amongst the football fans ive met a surprising number have two teams, a lower division one and an epl one, sometimes choosing a different epl one each year which they care about as much as movies at the cinema, aka just an entertainment product, while they care about the lower division team a bit more.

Again this is anecdotal, but the kids my childrens school, even when there isnt a major tournament on, are much more likely to have english kit than club kit and talk about one day being such and such english player (rashford comes up a lot for some reason)

Can you expand on why it's a problem supporting country over club especially when you hate the a league I'm interested in this?
I can't speak for him, but I hear it a lot and I think the argument is that if we had a strong culture of people supporting clubs and turning up to games, we would have a healthier set of leagues, be able to support p&r and have a better national team

I agree. Country always comes first. If I was held at gunpoint and asked if I’d rather see the Socceroos/Matildas win something versus Sydney FC winning something I’d always say Australia. As football fans and as humans we all support different clubs, but we all come together to support our country. This is a common mentality in Australian sport, except probably in NRL since rugby league isn’t really big in most other countries. I really just don’t get why Europeans don’t feel the same. I love Sydney FC but first and foremost I’m an Aussie.

I would travel further to watch the Socceroos than I would to watch the Roar.

There is something special about seeing and supporting our national team that goes beyond football. In my mind it is part of our country's identity and as representatives of us I stand proudly with them.

I have pondered before on this forum how I would feel if the Roar and Socceroos faced off - since it wouldn't be our nation taking on another so would come down to 'just a football game'.

Of course I want the Socceroos to be all powerful and victorious on the world stage - and that sort of suggests that I would need them to win against the Roar - but on a pure football basis the Roar is where my bread is buttered and I think I would hope we kicked our national butts.

It would be a game where I would be genuinely able to cheer for both sides offensively and defensively, and for every good bit of play from anyone. Not neutral - more supporting both sides.

When it came down to it neither side is in competition with the other except for it being a sporting game.

I would wear my orange shirt.

It is not about putting country first because each serves a different purpose and the two are not in conflict.

Like being asked whether you would prefer to lose oxygen or water for a year, or which leg on a milking stool is the most important.

Nothing gets me more hyped up than Australian games but it's the world cup that is just on another level. I have my club stuff every week so the international game is a real treat. The gaps in between make the marketing connection difficult for the FA. Not for me as there's so much monitoring going into next squads.

Exactly! NTs only get together every few months.

Exactly, not only do most people in England support one club, many support two......

100% not sure how this became an either or... following club football creates an appreciation for the sport. following the national team is en extension of that not in spite of it... The hundreds of thousands of roos fans this week, will go into hibernation in two weeks, for another 4 years, what part of that dont people agree with?

I never said it was a problem. You are the one that is constantly deriding the "suits" for not making the Aleague a more appealing "product".. If you, who is already an Aleague customer sees more appeal in a national team then your club how do you expect people who ahve never even watched the sport to engage?

In pretty much every other corner of the globe, 75% of the population has a football club to follow (just like here were its either NRL or AFL).

When the national team plays its not the "football" national team they support its the NATIONAL team.. the ONLY national team anyone cares about (apart from a few with cricket and basketball)

How can you have corners on a globe.

FFS!

No wonder Greece never amounted to anything in the world's history :P.

But when it comes to country or club, it’s country. Players leave clubs, but it’s much harder to leave countries. Clubs are businesses.
