Very much a deja vu then - that's 3 tournaments in a row they've had that tag
People saw these young but very talented kids like Guler and Yildiz with Calhanoglu and pumped them up to be a tournament dark horse. The results over the last few years never merited it, plus they have a few flaws the most obvious one being no striker. No wonder Deniz Gul doesn't start.

Correct - but also, FIFA weights World Cup matches more significantly, so losing to nations ranked lower than them severely punished Turkey.
Basically it goes (using Friendly matches in a sanctioned international window as the 1x baseline:
- 0.5x - Friendly matches held OUTSIDE a FIFA international window
- 1x - Friendly matches held during FIFA international window
- 1.5x - Nations League group stage
- 2.5x - Nations League playoffs and finals
- 2.5x - Confederations Cup qualifiers (eg, Asian Cup Qualifiers)
- 2.5x - FIFA World Cup qualifiers
- 3.5x - Confederations Cup finals tournament matches (prior to Quarter Finals)
- 4.0x - Confederations Cup finals tournament matches (Quarter Finals onwards)
- 5.0x - FIFA World Cup finals tournament matches (prior to Quarter Finals)
- 6.0x - FIFA World Cup finals tournament matches (Quarter Finals onwards)

Their lowest ranking ever was actually in 2013, when they were 22nd. For Brazil that’s ridiculously low given they’re, well, Brazil.
Interestingly, Brazil also have a positive record against all but four of the 88 teams they’ve ever played. They have a neutral record against Senegal and a negative record against Hungary, the Netherlands and Norway (who are famously the only team Brazil have played but never beaten). They’ve scored against all 88.
