General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2025/26 season

Have a league done anything to capitalize from today? I saw nabbout on cup fever not one mention about Melbourne city or a league.

We need to do better
Earlier this week The Age had a rolling video of all the Socceroos who have played or started their career at Melbourne City: JBos, Aiden O'Neill, Metcalfe, Leckie, Beach & Behich.

the league as a whole hasnt done much, but I think that’s more a problem with the east coast of Australia and how football is covered in those states

There has been plenty of print/social/ tv coverage (inparticular channel 10 & 7) in relation to toure and irakunda – obviously being Adelaide boys

In the last week alone, ive seen local tv coverage of:

  • The several south Australians in the squad and how SA is the home of football in this country (no complaints with that lol)
  • Watch party at the irakunda household, which included interviews with family and friends
  • Interview with one of irakundas old coaches at raiders, he told the story of how irakunda broke a 12 year old goals keeper arm with hard he shot – coach went on to state how there has been an influx of African players wanting to play for raiders due to irakunda.
  • AU ceo Nathan kosmina was on tv talking about how proud the club is in terms of the local players they have produced that are now on the world stage.
  • AU coach AA also had a little tv piece on both irakunda and toure as he was instrumental in their developement

Yeah I have noticed that the SA channels post more football content. The media in NZ aren’t as anti-football either.

thats because channel 7 Adelaide and channel10 Adelaide have pro football journos and sports anchors

7 has robbie cornthwaite while 10 has max burford and lucas rinaldi.

there was another 2 minute story on channel 7 adelaide tonight about irakunda

Melbourne Victory have given 30-cap Venezuelan international Giovanni Savarese their head coaching job for the next two seasons through the end of A-League Men season 2027-28, with his first competitive match at the helm of the side being their Hahn Australia Cup round of 32 fixture. He's expected to arrive in Melbourne in July at the conclusion of the World Cup but has already started planning for next season.

They play 46 games per season in League 2, the waste is he only started in 3. Never underestimate the conditioning affect of regular football.
I don’t.

You’ve made a good point though. Arnie used to talk about it all the time - and overlook AL players.

A decade or so ago, Raymond Verheijen, did a lot of work on Periodisation. Essentially, the findings were that once players did an overload over an optimum, injuries are most likely to occur.

It seems an AL season of 26 games, plus an 8-10 game ACL season is ideal, plus a few National Cup games.

Without the ACL it is too short.

On the other hand these 46 game English Champ, L1 and Scottish seasons appear to be too long. Quite a few players say with international fixtures as well, they don’t get enough rest. Whereas in the AL, international games are a welcome addition to the short 26 game season.

I think others have posted here the Dutch, Belgians and Portuguese have a 34 game season - which may be ideal.

I suppose if one has a durable body like Cam Burgess, a Champ season is ideal. However, Riley McGree has struggled with the Champ workload. He has been injured a lot.
