Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

Yes but Italiano did very well against him as did Geria when he came on.Turkiye need to develop a tall strong and quick striker as their short spear head was been fed crosses and having to compete against tall timber.
Agree.

Italiano jockeyed and delayed very well against him. I’ve already written that somewhere on G and G.

He was a constant menace against Aus though.

I’ve rewatched the first half again and noticed a few things:

- First up, Burgess was an absolute ROCK. One pass to Beach was perhaps not perfect, otherwise didn’t put a foot wrong and covered everything. I’m as excited about Herrington’s future as anyone, but it would be a massive mistake to drop Burgess, especially against McKennie and Balogun. After a full Championship season he’s in great form.

- Metcalfe played great, I owe him an apology. Would’ve liked to see him replaced by Volpato for the last 10 so Cristian is ready to make an impact in future games.

- The ball to Nessy was well planned and the 6th time someone tried to outpace their right back. Okon missed two long pass opportunities to Nessy, one to Bos, then overhit one to Bos, then passed along the ground to Nessy and it was intercepted before he went over the top to Nessy. Okon would often drop into left back to defend, I think so that both Bos and Nestor’s would be available for the counter. Okon actually needed to be more clinical and was fortunate to have that many chances. Still, dry impressive from him especially in defensive rotations and holding the ball.

- very interesting to see Circati move so far forward in attack, then Okon drop deep left to cover. Poppa certainly has detailed rotations to advance the ball.

Just watching our second goal. Cricati had intended to pass to Geria and it was deflected. Turkey also pressed really hard allowing Metcalfe to be free. Had Yengi scored from a pass it would've been his first touch. Velupillay and Yengi running forward really created the space to shoot.

From despairing at Poppa's haram ball I'm now a total Popa cult devotee. He can do no wrong. How perectly did it all come together against Turkey? The players that were bagged, like O'Neill and Okon, were transformed. Obviously the replay will tell a different story but the only dangerous error I can recall came from an errant backwards pass by Irankunda. Look I love Angeball but it only works for a certain skill-set which the Socceroos don't yet have. Poppa the perfectionistic pragmatist, in Him I trust. Can't predict his magic trick but I'll be very surprised if there are no surprises
Dont go getting baptised in the church of Poppa just yet... :P

It depends. Some of SBS/NITV is awesome (obviously the World Cup is the best thing on there) but some of its other programs aren’t amazing. Ditto for the ABC, some of its programs are classics but others are genuine dogshit.
Just like Australia's populace really.... Still, in all its flaws, SBS is the truest representation of all of Australia, not just the blonde kids in Summer Bay.

Fuck me dead, if there was less politics nonsense and more reminiscing about Irankunda's worldie, this thread (and indeed the world) would be a much better place.
If there was more acceptance that a kid from a Tanzanian refugee camp could play for a club called Adelaide Croatia and ALSO proudly represent Australia we wouldn't have this politcal crap dividing us, at least not in football...

I couldn't agree with you more big fella, but I'm not sure the match thread is the place to discuss it.

I'm not a mod so I'll shut up about this now. I'm just frustrated that threads are constantly getting derailed by political issues that, while worth discussing, are completely irrelevant to the matter at hand.
