Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

"I think the world has seen that Paul Okon's thing with the Socceroos isn't nepotism (his father is an assistant). Raised in the youth academy of Brujas and Benfica, he has the makings of a big-league player. The solution in the Aussie midfield. He moves the ball well and even assisted"

Did someone post some video footage of Hill Harper making the call? As in themselves being filmed? I'd love to see that.

Great call!! What media site is he on? Was that Andy Harper as well? Regardless, brilliant calling. David Basheer is fine but there's not the dragon-breathing fire in his commentating
SEN I believe

Beach's reflexes are catlike.

Reminds me a bit of Gordon banks and Ochoa, lanky and springy with super fast reflexes. Surely he doesnt stay in the A League much longer.

Funny that he was actually about the 3rd/4th rated keeper in the ALM. I think he is a talent - but he needs to go overseas and get good game time in a longer season to build consistency.

Most definitely. Good start and time to build. Izzo was considered a God after Canada and then was made to look poor the next times.

Brief thoughts and fan reaction while @AliG040803 remains in witness protection after his viral tweet

Great video, good analysis, and funny at the end with the Newy fella, good job!
One thing no-one's mentioned is that it must be a World Cup record for a team to be defending 70% (whatever it ended up being) of the time and not getting 1 yellow card. The only card of the game went to a Turk. Now that's discipline.

Getting feedback on the game from Aussie journos can be like marking your own homework, which is why I like o/s assessments. This fella Simon Hughes has a good perspective, if you can understand his strong Scouse accent

One thing that no one has commented was that throughout the build up to the WC (including the qualifiers) Popa has insisted that players must be fit, noting that some players had arrived physically unprepared with notable exceptions being Souttar & O'Neill who were coming off injuries. After watching the game, the players cooked as they were, were still outrunning the Turkish side. Perhaps that explains some omissions from the side. The question would then become, will the players have the stamina to keep going all the way through and whether they could succumb to soft tissue injury.

Japan & Sth Korea are looking very good, their biggest issue has been scoring goals, they got 2 each against Euro teams, including one of the best Netherlands (though Netherlands better team).
They are technically better than most Euro teams apart from the big 6 (Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands, England & Portugal).
End of day 4. There have been 4 AFC v UEFA games:
GROUP A KOR v CZE 2-1
GROUP B QTR v SUI 1-1
GROUP D AUS v TUR 2-0
GROUP F JAP v NED 2-2

So it's AFC W2 D2 L0 GD +3 Pts 8
UEFA W0 D2 L2 GD -3 Pts 2

When we played them in a friendly they won 2-1 but I think the score flattered them.

Did a lot of stats on the game looking at replays too. Unless they have a lot more cattle to choose from, Im not sure why they are so confident?
yer I hear you comms wise can't disagree....I just wanted to be sure of Sutho's comment.
I personally only like hearing HK at pre/HT/ post game for the rest are pretty drab/buzzkill got to say also.
In the end though I couldn't be bothered finding other links etc - I'll have to live with the buzzkill.
Buzzkill, a new word for me. Love new words

Speed beats height mate... And the Seppos are bloody fast, that much is clear... and brutal on the finish, never mind just Balogin did you see old mate Reiners outside of the right boot goal to ice it? If we give them the ball we are cooked... We'ere gonna have to play our way through them on Saturday, I hope Poppa has another magic trick up his sleeve.
From despairing at Poppa's haram ball I'm now a total Popa cult devotee. He can do no wrong. How perectly did it all come together against Turkey? The players that were bagged, like O'Neill and Okon, were transformed. Obviously the replay will tell a different story but the only dangerous error I can recall came from an errant backwards pass by Irankunda. Look I love Angeball but it only works for a certain skill-set which the Socceroos don't yet have. Poppa the perfectionistic pragmatist, in Him I trust. Can't predict his magic trick but I'll be very surprised if there are no surprises

Watching him v Turkey I'm thnking this guy's made of rubber

Reality was he made 7 saves that most keepers would make and one very good save.

That is what he is there for and he performed. My concern is his consistency - essentially what all young keepers struggle with. That's why after the World Cup he needs to move OS to a league where he plays 35-40 matches a year plus cups.
