Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

That’s a hot take. They’ve definitely got good depth but I rage Turkey’s forward line and midfield higher. Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız are outstanding young players and Germany should be fuming that they didn’t manage to get the latter.
Usa showed they are fast enough to catch space behind our midblock. So their speed presents a different challenge

I want to support Turkiye and wish them success in their remaining games because I think the game was played in a good spirit (and I've travelled there and loved it), but the post-match comments by Guler and Calhanoglu are disrespectful. To be blaming the refs where VAR is scrutinising everything and to be saying that they were dominant glosses over the fact that this was a perfectly executed defensive master-class by Australia, where they were out-coached and we scored two very fine goals in open play. We didn't score because we were big or physical. We sliced open their defence and punished them. They'll be hurting after losing a match that 68 million people expected them to win, after a 24 year absence. But please, a little grace and respect.
Yeah fully curacao and nz presented more attacking dynamism, apart from that one guler chance and the 2 free kicks we gave away we looked pretty comfortable

Crazy stat. If my calculations are correct (and im sleep deprived) but a 2 goal margin over usa would mean australia hits its highest ever elo

Our previous record was 1879

To be fair our elo like our fifa rank was hindered by our lack of world cup appearances having to go through a very tough qualification campaign and we didnt get the chance to battle harden with a rigorous qualification campaign

Even still, getting into the top 20 with so few in the big 5 is unbelievable

That Venezuela counter goal against Turkey just makes our 2 make more sense.

Trying to think of any stat records set or broken. This isn't our longest time leading a match as we scored earlier against Tunisia.

It is the first time we've scored 2 in a game since 2014.

Kudos to the ref today. Maintained control.
I agree, except all of us viewing at our watching venue thought he gave far too many decisions re fouls in Turkey’s favour.

Except we did quite well with goal kicks in our favour, which could have been corners to them.

Wonder what our experienced refs Muz, NicCarBel and Paul01 thought?

Was it our youngest ever World Cup starting team in terms of records, JS?

Burgess, at circa 29 may have been our oldest player? I think Souttar and O’Neiil are 27-8. Metcalfe about 26.

The rest 25 and under down to Iran and Okon at age 20. To have Circati, Bos, Toure and Beach as well, all aged under 25, augurs well for the future.

Great result, the Socceroos beat a very strong Turkish team, but the USA are going to be tougher. I was impressed at how well the Socceroos defended, and their counterattacks were excellent. To be honest, I thought Turkey was going to thrash the Socceroos, this is one of the best Socceroo performances I've ever seen.
I didn’t think they would thrash us, but be good in attack and midfield, like they were.

I thought the Turkish captain was a fool to enunciate they would dominate Aus. Nothing like it to motivate opponents!

None of Turkey have any previous WC experience- and the biggest stage. Having said that, given the cattle they currently have and the past quality of the Turkish league, they should have qualified for a lot more WCs. They must be mentally fragile, like they were today. Turkey in terms of football talent, is a far better current team than the UEFA Scotland and Czech teams in this WC.

Aus is a battle hardened World Cup team, having qualified for 6 WCs in a row, which only 10-11 teams globally have done.

Asia was the toughest qualification campaign this time we have ever had. However, Aus only had Souttar starting as a WC veteran.

Souttar’s life has changed. From not being selected by Scotland, he has ended up captaining Australia at the World Cup, with a whizz domestic generation emerging. Scotland can have Aussie Lyndon Dykes instead.

Beach great saves. But in the first half felt his distribution out from the back was class. He was the key reason why we had so many chances to get those long balls off. He manages to pass well under pressure and switch the play and gives our midfield/defence a chance to run into some space and pick out a ball for Toure and Irankunda to run on to.

Not as much in second half but then we were just committed to defending our lead. Hopefully against the US we can keep up a more attacking threat throughout the game.

If we'd won off a penalty and some scrappy set play the maybe I'd feel some of the analysis is right but I felt our tactics were so correct to nullify the opponent and our goals were classy strikes.
If someone learns corner kick from Goodwin maybe we would have scored 1 more goal in this game.

We really did look... comfortable though. You have to give credit to Popovic and the coaching staff. Completely and utterly outcoached and outmanaged this Turkey team.

Also I know we are going to get some people not happy with us for booting the ball up to no one so many times.... but man I am so glad we did. The most dangerous moments where when we carelessly gave away the ball in that second half trying to pass our way through along the ground and giving Turkey a chance to attack with our defence out of position.
