World Cup 2026 Australia thread

It's just one game and while Kuol needs to work on his end you could also ask questions of the system, teammates involving the player and the tactics.

Strikers starved of service aren't going to score. Some players get tonnes of starts and so little and keep playing. Kuol needs to be given starts again and again to even have the opportunity to do something. Bench cameos in panic mode won't deliver much.
He was one of their best players in that game. The plain fact is that when allowed to roam centrally his goal contributions are up there with Mo Toure and Archie Goodwin and better than Irankunda. If his manager doesn't know how to play him - (which incidentally his assistant does and he is the reason he was bought), maybe the manager is the problem.

Would love to know what the press in Turkiye and Paraguay are saying about the prospect of playing the Socceroos and any players in particular they see as being most dangerous. We've heard a bit about what the Americans have to say (not surprisingly!). Anyone got any insights?

The Turkish football press views their opening Group D matchup against Australia as a highly winnable opportunity to set the tone for the World Cup. While they respect the Socceroos' tactical organization under Tony Popovic, pundits are confident that Turkey’s "golden generation" has the superior individual talent to break through.

High-Profile Playmakers
The media—and European football analysts—frequently highlight Turkey's elite creative spine. Journalists point to the attacking prowess of Real Madrid's Arda Güler, Juventus' Kenan Yıldız, and Inter Milan captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu, expressing belief that these players can unlock any defense.

The Matchup Dynamics
  • Expectation to Win: Pundits consider Turkey's squad—often dubbed dark horses—as the technically superior side heading into the June 13 opener in Vancouver.
  • Respect for the Underdog: Despite their confidence, the Turkish press has warned against complacency, noting that Australia notoriously "never goes away quietly" and can be a physical, well-drilled unit.

    AI Overview

The Paraguayan press considers Group D to be highly competitive yet highly manageable. Analysts and pundits in Paraguay are viewing the Socceroos not as an insurmountable obstacle, but as a well-organized, defensively solid team that plays a structural style akin to East Asian sides rather than traditional South Americans.

Paraguay’s head coach Gustavo Alfaro noted that Australia’s transition to the Asian Football Confederation shifted their footballing identity, making them disciplined and tactically similar to Japan or South Korea.
Key angles from the Paraguayan media include:
    • Favorable Avoidance: Pundits are generally pleased with the draw because they successfully skirted heavyweights like Argentina, Brazil, France, or Spain.
    • Tactical Assessment: Paraguayan analysts view Australia as a physically sturdy, defensively formidable squad under Tony Popovic. They note that while Australia is dangerous on the counterattack with explosive players, they can occasionally become static in extended periods of possession.
    • The South American Edge: The press highlights Paraguay's own defensive tenacity, having survived the rigorous and highly competitive CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers by a very narrow margin.
    • Group Dynamics: With the USA viewed as the slight group favorites, the Paraguayan media believes the battle for the second qualification spot—or a strong third-place push—is wide open and that their squad is fully capable of taking points off the Australians.

I did a similar query yesterday where they mentioned Miller in our starting XI but there was no mention of Bos, Toure or Irankunda.

So essentially, Turkey are underwriting us, but Paraguay are seeing it as tough, but do-able is the way I'm reading that

The smaller countries tend to be more cautious of their opposite. Indo fans really thought they’d beat us in that qualifier in Sydney to the point where they spammed the Socceroos’ comment section on Insta only to get battered 5–1.

Perhaps Paraguay have looked at our South American games from the last 15 years and come to the conclusion that it'll be a tough game.

The paraguay write up is spot on.

This may sound silly but from the limited minutes I have seen Garang looks on a different page and twice as athletic and faster than anyone else. My intial assessment was that Garang was wearing ice skates but physically he is ok.
His teammates don't counter and progress the ball with short passes, not particularly creative ones either.

I feel Garang is capable of a lot. The issue is lack of service. He's still got a lot of dust to shake off and he'll only get better if the ball keeps coming to him or he seeks it. The manager's tactics may not involve him that much. If he were the first outlet then we'd be able to see him get a high ratio of dribbles and more.
