World Cup 2026 Australia thread

Guardian Football Weekly at 26 minutes in they discuss Group D. The whole 40 mins is great viewing if you like intelligent football commentary that doesn't ignore the political realities of the Biggest Show in Town being held in the capital of capitalism (eg dyfuckingnamic pricing). FIFA really is like an octopus with tentacles squeezing money out of fans, host cities, local governments, transport to games etc.

Once the football starts, that's what is in the spotlight. While there are political concerns, it's the media who keep bringing it up.

The ticketing and organisation side by FIFA has been a farce and this is what has tarnished the trip for many.

I suppose host cities have an abundance of accommodation and with fewer visitors the surplus has led to lower booking levels.

Cities charging a premium for accommodation during games have also missed out as it appears fans are being more tactical with their accommodation dates.

Undoubtedly we'll see selective street talk interviews asking people about the tournament and their dazed minds won't even know it's on. You either enjoy it and watch or you're just in you're own lala land.

I don't think the tournament will leave a big legacy on the American host cities as the infrastructure is already there and this will be an event revenue spike boosting overall income combined with all the other sports and events happening regularly.

The new Mexican stadiums are good for infrastructure and hopefully bribg long term positivity.

I mean he isn’t wrong but wowzers, what a blunt way to put it.
It's just one game and while Kuol needs to work on his end you could also ask questions of the system, teammates involving the player and the tactics.

Strikers starved of service aren't going to score. Some players get tonnes of starts and so little and keep playing. Kuol needs to be given starts again and again to even have the opportunity to do something. Bench cameos in panic mode won't deliver much.

Tommy Oar says US have used 50+ players and Australia have only used 30. That’s clearly not correct. Australia have also used 50+.
yep - according to Wikipedia we've had 61 players called up in the last 12 months. 8 of those have 0 caps, so at the very most we've used 53 players

I know we've had 60 players and played 49. I'd love to know who 61 is. That's either wrong or they were called up but didn't make a playing squad so I missed them.
I might have miscounted - was just a manual count of the 26 + "Recent Call Ups" on the wikipedia page. I would say that includes players who were called up but didn't make a playing squad.

Thats makes it 63 by my count in Popovic's tenure if you include training camp guys. Actually maybe 64. I had missed Bonetig, Esposito, Gersbach and Devenish-Meares. 49 have played under Popovic.

Wikipedia only includes players that were called up in the last 12 months. Because of this there was a brief point in time in which Sam Kerr wasn’t mentioned at all in the squads section of the Matildas page.

This is my full list. It probably stilll misses some train on players from some squads.
