Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Just having a think, who are the dual nationals that we haven't cap tied yet but probably should given (i) their current or potential ability and (ii) the possibility that their alternate nationality might take a look at them? Off the top of my head (and in no particular order):
  1. Cristian Volpato
  2. Antonio Arena
  3. Dan Bennie
  4. Alex Robertson
  5. Luka Jovanovic
  6. Dylan Leonard
  7. Dylan Scicluna
  8. Gianluca Okon-Engstler
  9. Ayman Gulasi
  10. James Overy
  11. Ante Suto
It's quite a list, to which you could add a number of additional names who seem very unlikely to be poached, but who I'd still like to get cap-tied (because you never bloody know these days). Those players would include Lucas Herrington, Marcus Younis, Paul Okon-Engstler, Deni Juric, Anthony Kalik, Noah Botic and Sam Klein.

I'd expect us to potentially cap-tie Robertson, Herrington, Paul Okon-Engstler, Deni Juric and Marcus Younis (though perhaps less likely) between now and the end of the Asian Cup in January.

However, for the more borderline examples (Bennie, Arena if he switches and Luka Jovanovic in particular) there's no obvious point in the next 12 months to cap-tie them; if the same format is adopted next time round, World and Asian Cup qualifying won't start until November 2027.

This is why I'd really like us to join the ASEAN Championship and use it to blood youngsters and serve as a development opportunity. It's a biennial tournament (next one is this July) that FIFA class as an "A" international and so serves to cap-tie players. It would be a perfect opportunity to send an U-23/fringe player development squad where all the players named above could be locked-in ASAP (subject to the usual caveats around age).

You do realise who the coach is right?

My post was intended to generate a conversation about who people would like to cap-tie, and the circumstances in which it might happen.

I’m fully aware our current manager seems to be entirely driven by short-term results and lacks any desire to leave the Australian game in a better state than what he found it.

Unfortunately I don’t believe the ASEAN championship ties a player, it is only the World Cup and full continental championships.

Interesting, why do you say that?

Goal.com reports the ASEAN championship as being recognised by FIFA as a Category "A" international tournament since 2016 (https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/fif...-points-to-aff-suzuki-cup/blt19e93564e6fa5d81).

I can't find anything that contradicts this, but happy to be corrected.
The ASEAN Championship only contributes towards ranking points and does not count as an official tournament in terms of locking players to an association which was confirmed in the eligibility rules thread.

Who is JRVKfootball? On the basis of the quote you have linked to, they don't appear to be sure whether or not the ASEAN Championship constitutes an official "A" competition, so I'm not sure that their opinion is conclusive. I wonder if we could ask him/her?

The goal.com article I quoted (which I accept might not be correct, but I have no reason to doubt it) says that 'the AFF Suzuki Cup is now being recognised by FIFA as a category A-Ranked tournament' and the FIFA eligibility rules talk about people being cap-tied when they have played three games (or one game over the age of 21) "in a match in an official competition at “A”international level". That all reads to me as though the ASEAN Championship (formerly the Suzuki Cup) is capable of cap-tying people.

They're a former director of regulatory processes at FIFA who oversaw the implementation of the new eligibility rules and the confirmation is that the ASEAN Championship is not official in terms of tying players to an association, only competitions organised by FIFA or confederations which means that the example post given about Izzy Gomez being tied to Australia would carry over to our other dual nationals.

Friendlies are A Internationals as well, but only World Cup and Continental Championships count in preventing a dual national from switching allegiance.

Interesting, though I would say that JVRK does not appear to be aware of the fact that the AFF Championship was sanctioned by FIFA (per that goal article). I might drop them a message so we can get it from the horse's mouth!

Friendlies obviously aren't a competition though, whereas that goal article describes the ASEAN championship as being "recognised by FIFA as a category A-Ranked tournament' and the FIFA eligibility rules talk about people being cap-tied when they have played three games (or one game over the age of 21) "in a match in an official competition at “A”international level".

It’s confusing, trust me. I originally thought this too hence why I wondered if Daniela Galić is cap-tied to the Matildas since she has five caps in friendlies and the SheBelieves Cup (a friendly tournament). Turns out she’s not.
