Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Sure if the white supremists keep the xenophobia and questioning of players Australianess based on their own narrow mindedness in there too.

That has nothing to do with HonestSpurs inexplicably crossing three lanes of the highway to take a swipe at our Italian Australian prime minister about ISIS brides and citizenship for no apparent reason in a thread about Australian dual national footballers.

Absolutely baffling stuff.

um sorry what? Think you may have gotten your wires crossed there a little chief.

I did and edited my post. Apologies

In my defence, I was confused by you taking umbrage to censure that was directed at someone else entirely.
All good, I love cuddly teddy bear Albo btw :)

I took offence to the consistent character assassinations of dual national footballers (in this case specifically Greek- Australian and Croat-Australian) who shouldn't have to justify their right to be Australians to some racist arse-hat online all the time... These kids represent me, my family and the vast majority of Australians in 2026 and should NOT have to defend themselves against such hateful discourse.

I don’t think anyone’s hating them because of their background or questioning how Australian they are. Anyone born and raised here is fully Australian in my eyes. I do however question their decisions. My view has always been that players should represent the country they were raised for most of their life in unless they truly aren’t good enough (coulda seen Nish Velupillay playing for Malaysia for example).

Replace “Stamatelopoulos” with “Triantis” and the match details with the China game and it’s perfect! Ditto for Sega.
Different positions and all but even the red carpet that Gethin Jones got could've been used for others.

Segecic did have injuries around many windows but opportunities were there.

Chaos in the Eredivisie.

Would this affect Vickery, in the sense that if he declares for Indonesian he would then forfeit his Aussie passport and become a foreign signing for MacArthur? And would they want to use a foreign spot on him?

No. Passportgate’s been going on for a while (see the dual international thread). In short, the problem is if a Dutch person acquired a foreign citizenship or nationality they automatically lose Dutch citizenship, therefore they typically lose an EU work permit unless they acquire another EU country’s citizenship or nationality. Australia doesn’t have this rule.

Does Vickery have to renege his Australia passport ala Williams in India, as Indo doesn’t allow dual citizens?

Oops, missed that part! Indo doesn’t allow dual citizenship either so yeah he would. Not sure if that makes him a foreign player though. That depends on what the APL decides.

The thing that’s causing the problem in European leagues though is they lack an EU work permit and have to apply for a different work permit. I believe Australia is similar in allowing New Zealanders to work under different conditions to everyone else.

I agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. FIFA made rule changes in the past to stop Federations recruiting players from other nations and they should implement a rule in a similar vein that would stop glory hunting kids being scouted from so called lower ranked nations because their grandfather emigrated when he was two.

In saying that, I can see how Australia would suffer from such a rule. I choose to feel entitled to their loyalty as an Australian. Craig Johnston is still a traitor

To be fair players like Tony Dorigo and Craig Johnston was forced to not play for the Socceroos because at the time they would face consequences at their clubs if they travelled to the other side of the world during the international break. The former was called up but prohibited from joining camp by his manager and then was naturalised as English and became part of the Three Lions squad at the 1990 World Cup, while the latter did once suggest that playing for the Socceroos (and I assume also Bafana Bafana) would be “like surfing for England” despite later being in eventually failed talks to represent the Socceroos. Nowadays, the Socceroos have British-born players who couldn’t make England, Scotland or Wales’ squads. Similarly, some Surinamese players have had to play for the Netherlands for similar reasons, whereas now the tables have turned and Dutch players of Surinamese descent who aren’t good enough for the Oranje can now go and play for the Natio.

As for players picking a better nation they weren’t born in: it can ruin international careers. Fikayo Tomori (born in Canada and raised in England) was prematurely capped for the Three Lions and now never plays for them. Had he’ve picked Canada he’d be a starter. If Cristian Volpato doesn’t pick the Socceroos, then truth be told he’ll never play senior international football. He’s just not good enough for the Azzurri and he may never play for clubs bigger than Roma’s squad and Sassuolo’s bench. Adrian Segečić is breaking through at Portsmouth but that’s not enough to be picked for a side of the Vatreni’s calibre. Nektarios Triantis will play for the Ethniki but they’re a weaker team than us and won’t make the World Cup and barring another upset (them winning the Euros in 2004 was a huge upset) the furthest they’ll go in the Euros is probably the group stage.
