He isn’t off the gist, I just don’t hang around serial gambling addicts.

Young people gamble less (despite the constant promotion of gambling everywhere including in kids’ games) so that’s probably why. People bet on racing even though it’s just horses running around a track on a racecourse for hours. I think that’s the only reason people follow it. Eventually that pattern probably means racing won’t be that popular eventually.

Over a million people also watch shows like MAFS too. If there’s one thing Australia sucks at it it’s TV. People here have horrible taste in TV shows and we make terrible TV shows.
My perception is that it is the same in the UK and the US. TV is a lowest common denominator medium, and always has been. The drive from the broadcasters for the cheapest possible product is relentless - reality TV is very, very cheap product.. I've been involved professionally and it is a truly horrible industry.

A big part of that is the Australian content quotas. 55% of content broadcast between 6am and midnight must be must be Australian made.
Reality TV is incredibly cheap to produce when compared to traditional scripted TV (eg: dramas, sitcoms, soaps, etc). Don't need to pay proper actors. Don't need proper script writers. No lengthy shooting schedules. No re-shoots. Reality TV is also way easier to get eyeballs. Traditional genres can take years to build a solid audience.

Broadcast TV is dying real quick. In 2017, 71% of adults said they watched broadcast TV. In 2024 that number was 46%. Part of that is the cultural shift, but I'd say at least a portion of that can be attributed to the utter rubbish on offer. Then you look at what 'watching' actually means. In 2011 adults under 50 watched an average of 75mins per day. In 2024 that number is 13 minutes for the same age group.
People crying for 'mainstream' media attention should not be looking at broadcast TV. It's simply not relevant anymore.

Yeah I’m with you on this. If we wanna watch a movie or TV show then it’s on a streaming service (Disney Plus, Netflix, Paramount+, Prime Video, Stan, etc). If we wanna watch sport then it’s on a streaming service (BeIn Sports, Binge, DAZN, Kayo, Paramount+, Stan Sport, etc). If we wanna get news we just use the internet or social media. Even the local broadcast channels here have streaming services now (7Plus, 9Now, 10Play, SBS on Demand, etc).

Foxtel is dying out even quicker. 15 years ago it was relatively common but now only 1.5 million people have a Foxtel subscription (excluding Binge and Kayo; including those it’s 4.5 million). It’s a drop across the West but noticeably more in Australia: in the UK 9.5 million people watch Sky TV, 36% of Americans watch cable as of 2025 (down from 76% in 2015). However, some countries still have very high rates, such as China where 84% of people (about 900 million people) watch CCTV (the state cable service).

It’s like the Chinese equivalent of the free to air ABC/SBS tv channels but with 12 (15? More?) channels.

In the UK, about 20 million watch on a fire stick.

To be fair CCTV is free to air not cable.
My mistake, but that’s still higher than here for FTA. I’d say China has their own streaming services (since they have basically their own entire internet, e.g their own search engines, socials, websites, etc) but a lot of people are too poor to buy a subscription.

So combining that with the Sky TV stat, that would be about 42.2% of the British population. Not too far off the US (slightly higher) but much higher than Australia.

Yiqiyi springs to mind, but I’m sure there are others.
