O'Neill passed the interview against Ecuador with flying colours and then he just sat at his desk and received a cheque. Bench him to wake him up.

ok negatives

Metcalf was a bit negative when receiving the ball in between the lines from the cbs. There were times he had enough space to turn but instead hit it back to the cbs. O'niell isn't technically strong enough to do this consistently, so that's just priced in with him starting. But we struggled to turn some impressive press resistance into meaningful attack in the first half. Maybe metcalfs first game at cm. he was just too conservative? Having 2 cms who won't progress the ball means we are only progressing the ball through our wingbacks

Boyle started bright but I thought struggled to make an impact,

Juric's first game seemed very quiet, will see if there is something I'm missing on the replay. His fotmob rating is decent so I'm open minded, but live seemed to struggle

No Robbo

any others?

Hopefully we get a Robertson and Yazbek pairing v Curacao.
Popaball would actually be ok with them as they're ball playing.

Still, we need the press to go hard here. Popovic will just say world cup is coming so first half was easing in but it's still not good enough.

As much as Boyle is a great bloke he hasn't held up his end of the deal since the March window last year. Woeful since then. He's got to be cut.
With Segecic and Volpato no longer options on the right our depth looks shakier there. I wanted to see Suto but surely we will v Curacao.

Everyone has whacked the Velupillay selection but he has National Team form and I reckon his pace could be a weapon against tiring defences. Although we should pick Bennie ahead of him for the same reason + versatility.

Hopefully these are people getting their last chance for the 26. Want none of them at the World Cup and add O'Neill
I think O’Neill has started more games than anyone under Poppa. He’s locked on to start three games in the US unless he’s injured. Poppa doesn’t want creativity from his midfielders, he wants defensive destroyers.

45 sec in nice flat cross by Italiano and duly defended. That's football really. Our goal came of their lapse while that early play looked good.

Thought it was your typical popovic performance. Pretty controlled and then have a go at the end.

Herrington is a top top player, If he fills out more he will play in the EPL.

Bos doing his normal things, thought Juric wasn't too bad some nice little flicks and such, worked hard.

But holy shit O'Neill and Metcalfe looked allergic to passing forwards for most of the game was frustrating to watch.

We’re so toothless up front …

BUT - if Italiano plays like that we won’t miss Miller. I think Yazbek is really good. Herrington is a stud (will surely do his ACL between now and June).

I don’t understand what Metcalfe actually brings to the team. There’s someone better at every position.
don't curse herrington haha

Metcalf for club and country is very strong off the ball both in possession and out of possession. Wins a lot of turnovers and gets a lot of touches due to his ability to find pockets of space and open passing lanes. Often when a player gets critiqued by lots of fans but plays a lot for club and country they are doing a lot of stuff that pleases coaches but fans don't pick up (usually off the ball work). Holman was similar. Toure and irankunda in a recent socceroos interview mentioned metcalf as their favourite player to play with

he also creates a lot of chances

Look, our style of play is boring, but beating Cameroon is a good result nonetheless, even if they were without Bryan Mbeumo.

Unfortunately Holman is exactly who Metcalfe reminds me of. Has all the tools but missing the end product.

I haven’t seen the interviews, but he seems too wasteful to be in the centre of the park to me, I’d rather Yazbek. We even looked to have more control with Okon in there.

To add stats to back that up, Metcalf is in the top 3% in the bundesliga for tackles per 90 and top 6% for intercepts, top 13% for touches, top 12% for duels won, top 10% for big chances created. His stats are pretty similar when he was in bundesliga 2 and played a lot more minutes - this is his game. Elite off the ball, has a killer pass and wins a lot of duals while being a poor finisher and not a very sophisticated dribbler.
