FIFA World Cup 2006 - Re-writing Socceroos History - A walk through old FIFA Games

The Socceroos have qualified for the Round of 16 after a demolition job on USA on Matchday 2, with a 10-3 victory, which puts them on top of Group F heading into the final matchday of the group stage.

Aurelio Vidmar and Mark Viduka both bagged four goals each, as Paul Trimboli and Ned Zelic each netted once.

The Socceroos face Germany in Lens for their final group stage fixture, where a draw will be enough for Australia to top the group and face Belgium in the Round of 16. A loss, and Australia will advance as runners up, facing a strong Netherlands side in the next round.

Australia have advanced to the Round of 16 in second place of Group F, where goals from Mark Viduka and Stan Lazaridis weren't enough to hold out a strong German side 5-2.

Terry Venables backed his decision to start key players on the bench in an experimental side with changes across the park.

"If you come in to a situation where you can rest these players to get more out of them at an integral time, then you do it."

As we head to Toulouse, Australia face Group E winners Netherlands in the Round of 16, with the winner to face either Argentina or Romania in the Quarter Finals in Marseille

Australia have been left to rue a string of missed chances after falling to Netherlands 5-2 in their Round of 16 clash in Toulouse.

A Patrick Kluivert masterclass saw Netherlands head into the half time break with a 4-0 lead.

Goals from Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka sparked signs of a comeback for the Socceroos, but Clarence Seedorf was able to dampen the appetite with a final goal.

Australia managed to take 17 shots - 10 of them on target - whilst Netherlands were much more clinical, finding the net 5 times from 10 shots, with 8 attempts on target.

But, for real, FIFA games with 10 minute halves and Professional difficulty, no matter the age of the game, kind of want to see how much the game difficulty fluctuates. FIFA 2000 is next (for Nations Cup final against New Zealand, a friendlies against Manchester United, FIFA All Stars, and Brazil, and 1999 Confederations Cup), but in my test runs, I’m consistently getting games ending like 10-7 and stuff like that. Might be tempted to halve the match time for FIFA 2000.

Kluivert demolished us in the first half so.. bit of a shame they also didn’t go much further in the tournament. Lots happened it seems - both Brazil and France failing to progress out of the group, and Argentina and Italy both failing at the Round of 16

A new look Socceroos look to bounce back into action, hosting New Zealand in the OFC Nations Cup, with the winner invited to take part in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico.

The OFC Nations Cup Winner has been drawn into a group with hosts and CONCACAF Gold Cup 1998 winners Mexico, UEFA Euro 1996 winners Germany, and AFC Asian Cup 1996 winners Saudi Arabia.

The other group will see 1998 FIFA World Cup winners England face off against CONMEBOL Copa America 1997 winners Brazil, CONCACAF Gold Cup 1998 Runners Up USA, and CAF African Cup of Nations 1998 winners Egypt.

Australia are once again the champions of Oceania, and are preparing for the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico with a trio of home friendlies.

First up, to celebrate the opening of the new Olympic Stadium in Sydney for the upcoming Sydney Olympic Games, FIFA have curated a list of who's who of world Football - including a homecoming of sorts for Christian Vieri - to take on the Socceroos to christen Stadium Australia.

Australia will then host Mark Bosnich's Manchester United - fresh off an historic treble winning season - in two more friendly fixtures before travelling to Mexico.

Australia's quest for the FIFA Confederations Cup trophy once again comes to an agonising end after a high scoring defeat to Brazil, in a repeat of the 1997 final.

Australia defeated World Champions England en route to the final, but a Ronaldo masterclass ensured that the Socceroos left the tournament with silver medals once again.

Australia will now focus on a range of friendlies before qualifiers begin for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
